Re: Basic Income for the poor?

Interesting time for me to posit a question which has little relevance to the subject:

Could an impoverished society be considered a society of abundance?

Here's the argument:

The purpose of scarcity as a motivating tool is that people will respond to the incentive of achieving further gains in wealth.  What if $1.00 a day was the most you could ever hope to achieve, based on structural issues within a society?  No matter how hard you work your ass off, the theoretical society would only give you a net income of $1.00 a day.  Thus, you have already achieved the greatest amount of "abundance" that you ever could achieve.

Just curious for responses... throwing out a random thought.  smile

Re: Basic Income for the poor?

Anyway, a basic income for the poor wouldn't work on a mass-scale.  There are simply too many inflationary pressures for any amount of macro-level pay-outs to be of any use, really.

What needs to happen is for the means of production to be individualized rather than conglomerated by multi-national corporations.  That is, individuals of various nations need themselves to acquire the resources and develop the means to produce from those resources the products necessary to satisfy their own basic needs.

Reliance on the establishment to ensure an economy conducive to the survival (nevermind actual prosperity) of individuals is, simply, becoming less and less tenable year after year due to ever increasing scarcity (rather than increased abundance) of resources and ever-increasing relative costs of production.

Thus the best thing governments can start doing is to foster alternative means by which persons may pursue their individual survival (and prosperity), ie.  dramatic deregulation of and / or investment in small-scale industries and increased taxation of multi-nationals.   They need to start doing this quickly, before regulators become culpable for genocides resulting from masss-deaths: starvation, mal-nutrition, preventable illnesses, etc..

"The premise is that in order for human society to function there necessarily should be a scarcity of resources"

Why is that?

Wow, xeno.  Way to completely shit on a hypothetical scenario meant primarily to test people's understanding of the world...

Oh, and nice job of being able to thoroughly justify your views, rather than just posting one-word responses.

(If you don't understand the sarcasm in the above, then I'll lay it out very clearly: I have dubbed you as such:

Cool.)

Re: Basic Income for the poor?

Abundance is relative. Standards of living are relative. Everything is relative! ^.^

Anyways I already said what I wanted to say on this topic. The whole concept is silly and won't work on a wide scale. Beyond that I see no point in discussing the issue.

"Good question Simon."

You based your entire view on that assumption and I'm trying to understand where you're coming from. It's not meant for Zarf or Lizon.
