Topic: don't ask/don't tell... decline of democracy?

http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,643396,00.html (english)

In germany we face general eletions on 27. Sept. 2009. in former times our parties fought their normal campaigns of discussions, accuses and promises.
This year no party tells the voters what they really want to do after the election. That is very strange, but nobody seems to care. Germans are very "cool" these days, nothing does bother us. Financial crisis, decline of german exporting industry, global warming, war in afganistan? We just don't care it seems to a lot of people. On the other side we all know for sure, that after the election the winner will present us the bill of budget cuts and tax raisings for the next years. But we don't care. Is this the future of western democracy?

I may even vote for the pirates this time.

"On the other side we all know for sure, that after the election the winner will present us the bill of budget cuts and tax raisings for the next years."

Right! and we know that will happen, regardless of who will win the election.
I think we have one big Problem in Germany, or probablly in all western democracys.
Politicians do only care for their own benefit. They only care about getting power, and staying in power, so they keep saying things the people wanna hear. and they keep not doing those things after they got elected. Steinmeier just promissed 4 million new jobs.. that would mean unemployment would be totally gone. how realistic is that please?
I used to be a SPD supporter but in these days they simply make me sick. they have nothing to offer. Same goes for all major partys.
CDU isnt even saying what they wanna do when they win the election.

I can totally understand if people get tired of this. I can totally understand when they begin not to care about our politicians. In the last years politicians have shown they totally do not care about the people also. There is something horribly wrong in our system. Modern day politicians are like "made politicians" no job but politician, no life experiance, only doing blabla and doing a good show. more like actors.

I even joined the pirate party lately. They at least have a goal they follow and appear not to be so fed up yet.
If they would not be.. honestlly i would not care about elections this year. Non of the big parties has any ideas to offer.

Re: don't ask/don't tell... decline of democracy?

People in power will go as far as they are allowed to go and it is the voting system that decides. Its a power balance. The better the politician lie the more power they have, the smarter the people vote, the less. I was wondering how the system in Germany works. Can you vote a party as well as a person?

Re: don't ask/don't tell... decline of democracy?

yes, we have to cast 2 votes. one for a person and one for a party.

I think a good idea would be to make all political offices be not re electable.
Politicians then could concentrate on doing their job instead of working on their re election.
Maybe u should make 5 or 6 year terms instead of 4 years then though.

Every democracy/republic is really an oligarchy.

yeah lets become communist. you dont have to vote or do anything. just sit your ass at home and wait for the government to spoon feed you! the beauty of communism! yikes

i love you all!

Re: don't ask/don't tell... decline of democracy?

Being involved in politics is to be tainted, somehow.  The stench of neo-mercantilism pervades from virtually all politicians everywhere.

Re: don't ask/don't tell... decline of democracy?

Maybe the problem lies in the people, if they 'don't care' that'll be their mistake

although at the other hand this might vouch for a "no care party?" where things aren't
about getting into power or trying to be rich but creating happyness and doing their best
individually to make as many ppl as possible happy

at the other hand I do think people care somewhere, but to give an opinion they have to
know something about it, not everyone is an expert in economics, and I think those whom
are doing economics etc do face these problems and think about it, but when no1 has a right
or better solution what would you stand up for then you might aswell just let fate deside, kinda like randomning
in PW.

And the parties themselves might still be confused on this difficult 'crisis' situation.

decline of democracy, I don't think it is, in a way it might even be increase of democracy.
but maybe the party members should take shorter hollidays up yodeling in the southern mountains
and find a campaign line, mission, perhaps obama can help them.
