Topic: Car insurance

Hey guys! missed me?! tongue haha

ive recently been looking for car insurance and a first car.. I am from england for those who dont know.. Legal driving age is 17, i turn 18 on januarry. I'll have passed my test within a few weeks and am currently looking for a nice but cheap car and insurance...

was wondering what other people did for thier first car. Insurance costs are crazy for my age. Cheapest i got mine down to was 1500 and that was as being a named driver on my dads insaurance wih a renault clio 1.2. with protected no claims so my no claims rises.

the car will cost 1000 so my total is 2500.. thats pretty hefty and yet thats the cheapest ive found for a few days looking sad

any ideas?!

i realy want an mg zr 02 plate tongue

my god i love those cars!

only problem is its 1.4..  insurance is around 2200 and the car is 1800.. haha price is quite steep hmm

Re: Car insurance

Hmmm, well I don't exactly know the conversion rates, but that insurance does seem hefty. yikes

I got my first car for $5000 Australian (half price from a friend of a friend) great car, 4 door sedan, 6 cylinder engine, blah blah. My insurance only costed me $600 yearly, in my mum's name though.

Had to shop around for that price though, the more well known insurance companies wanted $900-$1500

Re: Car insurance

Do your pass-plus, that'll knock a bit off. Insurance is high because you're young and male, therefore you'll like end up crashing.

Re: Car insurance

....yeah in a renault 1.2 you could hit anything that wasn't going over 25mph tongue

Re: Car insurance

idk how thing work there in england, but here in the states (or at least the state I live in), you can take what is called a defensive driving course, it's 8 hours long and costs about $100 and if you take it, it'll knock off like 15% on your insurance rates.  I'd ask the insurance companies if there is something similar where u live.

Re: Car insurance

Pass Plus I believe knocks ur insurance off around 20-30% usually. When I was 17 I got a 92 VW Golf using pass plus and paid

There was a top gear episode about this, watch it!

Re: Car insurance

I believe if you do not have insurance, the usual penalty is they scrap your car. This can work out to be cheaper then paying the insurance, but then you obviously can't claim even if its not your fault.

In Canada for not having insurance and registration is jail time(6months?)+fine(upward 3k)+lose ur license

Re: Car insurance

Use to be in UK, jail time, but our prisons are full and we r a small country, lol. So scrapping the car was seen as the best way to do it, the only way to re-offend was to get a new car. Although this has inadvertly increased car thefts, lmao.

Re: Car insurance

No problemo Humidity, I will take this opportunity to re-emphasis the need for pass plus. It will take 6 hours, usually done down Birmingham if your within 80 miles of it, and will reduce your costs considerably over the years. Also go third party as its only going to be an old banger your driving I presume lol! As for third party fire and theft, thats gives you the option of claiming its been nicked which can be handy, depending on the individual, lol. And the more boy-racer the car, the more expensive the insurance, but that doesn't mean you should be driving a VW Beetle, lmao.

Re: Car insurance

i would deffinatly recommend doing your pass plus course, most driving instructors can do this, phone around and ask a few local driving instructors, you just have to do 6 core subjects and a minimum of i think 6 hours, when your competent at this your instructor will pass you and send off for your certificate, this saves you upto 30% depending on ur insurance company, some driving instructors also have a insurance company they can put u through at a discounted rate, (they get commision on this) and like everyone has said, shop around, tick immobiliser, no more than 10k miles a year, garage and put a job down, i made the mistake of having a peugeot 306 as my first car and insurance was

Re: Car insurance

frozenice says 1.2 is the biggest you'll want? my how things are different here in the u.s.

it is hard to find a car with anything smaller than a 1.6 or even 1.8, and those are mostly japanese. american cars rarely have less than a 2.0l engine, lol. mine is a 3.0l v6 and i whine because it only has 150hp.

Re: Car insurance

lol thats a lot different to over here, i have a 1.6l engine n thats quite high, for young drivers, there are lots of big engines about, but lots more small engines like 1L n 1.2L
