Topic: Buying vs Building computer

Is buying a computer always cheaper or what? I was under the impression before that building would be cheaper than buying. (just like if u cut ur own grass its cheaper than hiring someone to cut your grass for you). but it seems it is not the case with computers.

can someone enlighten me?

Re: Buying vs Building computer

If you know enough to buy totally wholesale, yes, probably.

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.

Re: Buying vs Building computer

If you build one you get exactly the specs you want.... if you buy a cheap one it's really build of the cheapest sh*t on the market....

Re: Buying vs Building computer

It's usually cheaper to buy one whole. Building is cheaper when you already have parts that you can reuse in the next pc (tower, power supply, sound card, graphics card etc).

Re: Buying vs Building computer

it depends on the computer. buying a whole computer will usually be cheaper if you buy a cheap computer. gaming comuters however have inflated prices, and its easy to save several hundred dollars expecially if you have a operating system that you wont have to but, and even more so if you spend the time to learn how to safely overclock. about 10 months ago, i built  a computer for $800, that would of cost me at least $1500, probably $2000 whole. also, when you buy whole computers, they often cheap out on psu's and memory sticks, that can cause you problems in the long run; which you can avoid when building your own computer.

but if you was a cheap computer to serf the web and pirate movies/songs, act; a whole computer will probably be cheaper, because the manufacturers get discounts on the items from buying in bulk.

as an example of the customization of building your own computer. when i was building my own computer, i had a 24" monitor with a native resolution of 1920x1200. i knew that having such a large resolution is extremely demanding on the videocard. so i bought the 2nd best videocard on the market at the time, knowing that would be the best way to maximize performance at that resolution; if i bought a whole computer, the only whole computers with that videocard would of been the extreme gamer computers and they would of charged me a huge premium. yet, i spent only $800 on my computer, and my videocard is the bottleneck in most the games i play, and if i spent the $2000+ on a whole computer with that same videocard, the videocard would still have been the bottleneck and it wouldnt perform any better then my $800 computer.

Re: Buying vs Building computer

I'm actually building my own PC atm, gonna start putting it together tomorrow.

I didn't bothered to check out prices for pre-built PCs but imo there are lotsa advantages of building you're own. Like being able to shop around for parts so you can find exactly what you want for the cheapest price, not having to pay assembly fees, and as avo said if you already have an OS (like I do, I'm using my old HDDs) then you don't have to waste money on another.

I'm building a gaming PC though.

Re: Buying vs Building computer

I looked for a whole computer with close to the specs the computer I built myself had...

I could never get less than 200 euro's more than what I paid.

And another thing, all new PC's come with Vista. XP 64 rules.

This forum is stupid.

That pretty much summed it up.

Thanks. I already have a pretty good computer that I bought off of Ubid.com. They sell refurbished prebuilt computers from major manufacturers like HP. I saved LOADS of cash on it. Now, if i want to play the latest game or something, I could just put in a better graphics card or more ram chips.
