Topic: According to China - Once Chinese, always Chinese
Not sure if this has been take notice of in the international press, but basically and Australian citizen who is the head of the Chinese arm of a very large Australian mining company, Rio Tinto, has been arrested in China on spying claims. He hasn't been charged yet but is being held in a very unpleasant jail in Shanghai.

This is not a simple nation on nation spying case though. About a month ago a large state owned Chinese steel maker was set to buy a 16% stake in Rio Tinto, which would give them influence over the setting of iron ore prices and try to get cheaper commodity prices for Chinese companies. The deal fell through as the Rio Tinto side pulled out and has instead opted to partially merge with another Australian miner BHP Billiton. Combined they would be the largest iron ore supplier in the world and have great power over setting iron ore prices.
The so called 'spy' in question, Stern Hu, has been accused of stealing state secrets, however these have not been specified and it is suspected by many that he received normal business information that would normally have been passed on in a major business deal. As the Chinese company is state owned, it is likely that they decided to consider the info as state secrets and arrested the executive.
On to the topic in the title. Just today a few academics have spoken out to suggest that on top of this being sulking on loosing out big time on a business deal, it might be punishment to Stern Hu for working in his own companies interest rather than that of the Chinese state. See Stern Hu is Chinese born, but became an Australian citizen yet it has been suggested that the Chinese government expects all Chinese born to hold loyalty to China first above all subsequent citizenships and business roles.
Let me just say that I have many Chinese friends, some China born, and I would never believe that they are somehow secret Chinese agents. But it must be hard for Chinese born people who have chosen to live and work for other nations, yet when they go back to China they are expected take China's interests firsts before other loyalties or risk being shunned by their birth countries.
