Chavez sends tanks to Colombia border in dispute

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela President Hugo Chavez ordered tank battalions to the Colombian border and mobilized warplanes on Sunday after Colombian troops struck inside Ecuador in an attack on rebels.

He also ordered the shutting of Venezuela's embassy in Colombia and the withdrawal of all diplomatic staff in the dispute, warning Colombia's actions could spark a war in South America.

"Mr. Defense Minister, move me 10 battalions to the frontier with Colombia immediately, tank battalions," Chavez said on his weekly TV show. "The air force should mobilize. We do not want war."

Colombia's military said on Saturday troops had killed Raul Reyes, a leader of Marxist FARC rebels, during an attack on a jungle camp in Ecuador in a severe blow to Latin America's oldest guerrilla insurgency. The operation included air strikes and fighting with rebels across the frontier.

On Saturday, the anti-U.S. Chavez warned Colombia against doing the same in Venezuela because he would interpret it as a "cause for war." On Sunday, he said he would send Russian-made fighter jets into U.S. ally Colombia if its troops struck in Venezuela.

The leftist, anti-U.S. Chavez has been in a diplomatic dispute with his ideological opposite, Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, for months because of the Venezuelan's mediation with FARC rebels over their hostages. Uribe has accused Chavez of using the mediation to meddle in Colombian affairs.

On Sunday, Chavez accused Uribe of lying about the details of the operation that killed the rebel in Ecuador, where the leftist government of President Rafael Correa is a close Venezuelan ally. He called it a "cowardly assassination" of a "good revolutionary."

Ecuador has withdrawn its ambassador in protest and also questioned if Uribe lied when he initially explained to his southern neighbor that the strike was in response to fire from rebels across the border against Colombian troops.

"He (Uribe) is a criminal," Chavez said. "Not only is he a liar, a mafia boss, a paramilitary who leads a narco-government and leads a government that is a lackey of the United States ... he leads a band of criminals from his palace."

Can this lead into a regional war?

Dead rebel's laptop shows Chavez is funding rebels, Colombian police say

BOGOTA, Colombia: Colombia's police chief said Monday that documents recovered from a slain rebel leader's computer reveal financial ties between Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Colombia's largest guerrilla group, including a recent message that mentions US$300 million in Venezuelan support for the rebels.

The official, Gen. Oscar Naranjo, didn't say if there was any indication in the Feb. 14 message that Venezuela actually delivered this money to the rebels.

Another document found in the laptop belonging to slain rebel leader Raul Reyes suggests financial ties between Chavez and the rebels dating back to 1992, Naranjo said. At the time, Chavez was jailed in Venezuela for leading a coup attempt, and was plotting the comeback that eventually led to his election as president in 1998.

"A note recovered from Raul Reyes speaks of how grateful Chavez was for the 100 million pesos (about US$150,000 at the time) that the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, delivered to Chavez when he was in prison," said Naranjo told a news conference.

Reyes, the FARC's main spokesman, was among the rebels killed Saturday in a Colombian commando raid on their camp just across the border in Ecuador, infuriating Chavez and his ally, Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa.

Chavez has called Colombia's President Alvaro Uribe a "mob boss" and a "liar." In return the Colombian government has expressed its concern at links between Venezuela and the FARC.

Sweet, they all have a cause, the only thing lacking is a war.  My biggest problem with a war though is it will proably raise the support for Chavez (even more).

Re: Chavez sends tanks to Colombia border in dispute

I wonder what this will lead to. wouldnt object too much against some more Dutch military presence there. Afterall he threathened to invade the dutch colonies if theyd go independant, basically meddling in our politics and making provocations.

FARC runs cocaine and kidnaps for ransom. That's the sort of "good revolutionary" this monkey supports. Oddly enough I never heard he threatened Surinam. I think he's capable of starting a war, Idi Amin did with far less resources. I don't think a President Obama would stave him off either.

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.
Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.

Re: Chavez sends tanks to Colombia border in dispute

Chavez aside, military intrusion across borders can be conidered as an act of war.
Ecuador and even Venezuela would fools to tolerate it whitout consequences. tongue

The Saturday raid, which Ecuador's President Rafael Correa said violated his nation's airspace, left two Colombian rebels dead.

Correa said he was "disposed to go to the ultimate consequences" in response to the raid, and Chavez said he firmly stands behind Ecuador.

doesnt sound like it... tongue

Check you sources, Ecuador wouldn't have kick the Colombia ambassador if that was true

Arms why did you use terms like anti-U.S. Chavez so much?

To the point, difficult situation there, Colombia shouldn't have done that. But Colombia is better military equipped.. Hugo Chavez is not stupid he will not go to war alone.

a nation has the right to take out targets across the border if the local government is unwilling or unable to take them out...

A nation does not have the right, that statement is stupid lol. what Colombia did is an act of war, If Mexico did a military expedition in USA in order to kill someone, i am sure you wouldn't like it.

Re: Chavez sends tanks to Colombia border in dispute

Indeed it would be like Chile entering the United States to pick up or kill Henry Kissinger, who has yet to be brought to trial in the U.S for his crimes against humanity and his complicity in Operation Condor.

There are a whole heap of countries (France, Spain, Brazil..etc) waiting for the chance to nab him but so far he's safe in the USA.
