Topic: Muslim Terrorists or Freedom Fighters?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/8135203.stm

ethnic ughuirs in Xinjiang province, People's Republic of China have been described by the PRC as 'terrorists'.

Ethnic ughuirs are fighting for a free homeland for their people as Communism and ethnic Han Chinese threaten their culture and identity.

So are these Muslims terrorists or Freedom Fighters?

Re: Muslim Terrorists or Freedom Fighters?

it's not ethnic cleansing. ethnic cleansing would be the chinese deliberately trying to wipe out the ughuirs.

on the other hand what is happening is that the Ughuirs are becoming a minority and eventually will be pretty much wiped out naturally over time.

60 years ago only 6% of the people in Xinjiang were Han Chinese now thats over 40%.

the ughuirs if they want to survive need independence but of course China is too strong. Similar things are happening in Tibet. Although Ughuirs and Han chinese look vastly different to eachother. Tibetans and Han much less so. Assimilating the Tibetans into Chinese culture is therefore much easier.

an enemy. but terrorists are always a minority of some sort.

since the ughuirs are minority they are 'terrorists'
since the Tibetans are a minority they are 'terrorists'

Re: Muslim Terrorists or Freedom Fighters?

Targetting non-military, non-tactical targets with the sole intent of causing terror is what makes one a terrorist. This is why terrorists are the bad guys: they're the ones bombing women and kids.

The word does have a meaning. At least it did. It only fails to or means "whatever you say it means" if you keep raping it. Please, defend the English language from terrorism like that on this forum!

So are Americans...

'bad guys' is a relative term.

The English language is used to convey meaning. Sorry, but to preserve an ineffective system in absurd tongue.

Re: Muslim Terrorists or Freedom Fighters?

" (CNN) -- China's remote Xinjiang region, hit by violence that officials say has left scores dead, has seen a recent surge in unrest involving ethnic Uyghurs.

The Uyghurs are a mainly Sunni Muslim group found throughout Xinjiang, a vast and arid territory that straddles the ancient Silk Road trading route and forms China's western borders with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan.

With a distinct culture and Turkic-based language, Uyghurs are guaranteed equal rights and limited autonomy under China's constitution, however ethnic tensions run deep. Some Uyghurs feel threatened by the steady influx of migrants from China's overcrowded east.

Millions of Han Chinese, the country's dominant ethnic group, have migrated into Xinjiang over the past 60 years, prompting complaints that they dominate local politics, culture and commerce at the Uyghurs' expense.

The dissatisfaction has turned violent at times, including a major flashpoint in 1992 when several buses were bombed in Urumqi.

    * Dozens killed in ethnic unrest in China

Beijing has blamed such incidents on Uyghur groups seeking an independent Muslim state, but China insists few Uyghurs support the separatists.

The government has launched sporadic crackdowns on what it says are terrorists operating among Xinjiang's 19 million people. Ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics it said it thwarted two plots involving Uyghur militants.

Human rights groups have accused the communist government of using anti-terrorism operations as a pretext for suppressing the ethnic group, charges Beijing has denied. "

ya. its not a new concept of labelling a minority something horrible and propogating the s!@$ out of it. This happens time and time again in history and "terrorist" is just another one of those. The government can now get away with doing whatever they want to the cities these people live in and no one will say a thing. Because they are fighting "terrorists" right?

You're claiming that having a meaning to the word "terrorist" is ineffective, and that it would be better if we all just redefined words to mean whatever is politically expedient for our dishonest purposes of misinforming the public? Needless to say, I disagree.

Re: Muslim Terrorists or Freedom Fighters?

it's really a bad stereotype to label Muslims as terrorists, not all of them are and it's not their fault. I blame Muslim extremists for their corrupt, twisted words of Quran (Koran).

Proverbs 11:14 "Where there is no guidance the people fall,
But in abundance of counselors there is a victory."
