Re: Minnesota - Too much like Europe?
I always laugh when I'm watching some stupid American show and hear all kinds of places named after European cities.
That cracks me up.

Bismarck, North Dakota was named after Otto von Bismarck in the hopes he would travel there and promote German immigration.
I hope you weren't drinking when you read that
My logical brain at work?
1) Minnesota uses the European model
2) Minnesota has a high rating as you say
My conclusion: The European model works?
You're not counting all the variables. You are taking it for granted that a free market is the most efficient and effective way to run an economy. Yet if public transportation is convenient and cheap, more people can afford to get jobs that are further away from home. It also means that fewer people need cars, and can use the income that would be spent on insurance, gas, car, etc. elsewhere.
This is of course just one example, and is also the reason why the family bank system works better in IC than a bunch of SS guys.
if Minnesota "works" I'll take fail
spoken as somebody who put up with it for 3 years.
*shrugs*
Statistically it works. You can't really pose much of an argue against statistics like that.
@ Chris_Balsz
i dont know where you got your picture but it sort of reminds me of the guy on the cover of "a confederacy of dunces"
i'd imagine the author would look somewhat like that as well, you know, overweight, southern, gay, suicidal, that sorta thing

Go live there and see what I mean.
For starters, "commitment to public transportation" means they built a railroad from the airport to a big mall to downtown Mpls. So I guess if you wanted to get in and out--and you would--that's awesome. If you freaking LIVE THERE and wanna go from Point (n1) to Points (n9x 10to the 110th) where n is any point not being the airport, the mall or downtown--you're SOL.
For another, I guess they're also Euro in that they have baneuils where the black people are allowed to go to pot, because, y'know, that's what they do. I mean, 15 yr olds sell weed on the corner for 4 blocks. that's "their part of town" and the cops let them. Now, I can see in LA where there are 6000 cops and 600,000 gang members, that's one thing--but in a city with about 4000 gang members and 500 cops, I think somebody is having too many doughnuts.
One day when I was there a video store was having a going out of business sale. the owner had been held up 5 times by the same armed robber. And one day the cops told him the guy was caught robbing a store in Wisconsin. So whens the trial for robbing me five times? he asked. and they said, why bother? he's gonna do hard time in Wisconsin. Why bother with 5 felony counts in MN?
And for another thing, when you move there, you will hear about how awesomely awesome it is that you live in the Queen City of the Prairie, a world city on the level of paree or dusseldorf or Osloh, and not some shithole like Sioux Falls or Ames, IA.
