The word "theory" used within the context of scientific discourse has a very different connotation to that used elsewhere.

people believe it because they don't think it could be anything else. its a theory because theres no way to be absolutely positive unless you go back in time. but remember, people used to think flies came from meat... who knows what people will think in a few more hundred years

I agree with Primo on this

I think its safe to say that a lot of people believe in god because it is a safer and better way to live their life rather than coming to terms with the fact that their might be an 'End' to existence. I myself am an agnostic so i often think of both sides, but i think there are some things in life that we arn't meant to find out or discover.

I talked to a priest on a school trip once who told me after questioned that if i didnt believe in God but i was a good person than i would simply cease to exist...which made me think 'ok so i must believe in god just for their to be an afterlife?' I wouldn't want to devote my life to something that has no facts or substantial evidence to back it.

I do believe in evolution rather than a man waving his hand around for 6 days.

It is a great concept and i'd class myself as a optimistic agnostic, i hope their is an afterlife...but the contradictions that numerous relgions have are just to ridiculous to believe in. Also im a firm believer than religion is one of the biggest weapon of mass destruction on this planet...

Well, I just think you should believe whatever you want. No actual god ever said you're not going to heaven if you don't believe in them, that's what the dousches said who thought they should represent their belief.

its not a question of whether to believe in God or to believe in the theory of evolution; and if my comment appeared to say so, i apologize for not making what i meant more clear. both can exist and both can not exist, or one can exist and the other not exist. I was merely saying that people believe in the evolution theory because its a scientific explanation that has no scientific rivals.
