Re: Parents Choose Prayer Over Doctor, Girl Dies
If the parents aren't charged, let's face it this is criminal negligence at best, I hope they get lynched.

actually, custom dictates that it's very common for the child to be religious if his/her parents were religious. so yes, it was likely the daugther would have grown up to be a dumbass.
not saying it was right that she died. good grief, people with religious beliefs shouldn't be allowed to have children ![]()

here's another link (same story) with a bit more info.
here's an excerpt that wasn't included in the original link.
>Leilani Neumann said she and her husband are not worried about the investigation because "our lives are in God's hands. WE KNOW WE DID NOT DO ANYTHING CRIMINAL. WE KNOW WE DID THE BEST FOR OUR DAUGHTER WE KNEW HOW TO DO.">
Take careful note of what's in caps. Now I'm no legal expert but not taking your daughter to a doctor when she's ill, ignoring symptoms of illness, and generally taking no steps whatsoever to ensure your childs health all strike me as behaviour that SHOULD be criminal.
This is just plain stupidity... Nothing more nothing less..
What's more worrying is the polls included in the article. 15% of the people think they should be allowed to refuse mediacal treatment for religious reasons, while 68% believes a prayer does help a sick person....
Well if anyone believes that prayer helps there was a test under observable conditions: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/health/2002901053_pray31.html
"There was virtually no difference in complication rates between patients in the first two groups. But the third group, in which patients knew they were receiving prayers, had a complication rate of 59 percent, significantly more than the 52 percent in the no-prayer group"
It's also worth noting that of the three groups the group that did not know it was being prayed for had the same results as the no prayer group.
And for those of you who honestly believe that all science is the source of all evil:
"You shall not put the LORD your God to the test." (Mt 4:7)
See? Even Jesus agrees!
The parents should be shot.
It's amazing to see so much hate spewed out about a specific group of people on this thread. It's worse than racism.

I have to agree with you. My uncle is probably the most religious person you could meet that isn't a rabbi, even he is smart enough to understand that praying to God can't save some one from a serious illness. The parents are just [tree]ing idiots, along with the 68% of people believe that prayer will save people.
To those people and the parents:
If prayer cures people then why don't we have a cure for cancer? I doubt I'm the only one here who has prayed for someone with cancer.
lol, its amazing you guys are able to blame religion on this.
"'We just noticed a tiredness within the past two weeks," she said Wednesday. "And then just the day before and that day (she died), it suddenly just went to a more serious situation. We stayed fast in prayer then. We believed that she would recover. We saw signs that to us, it looked like she was recovering."'
two weeks before she died she appeared alittle tired. and then she showed alittle more serious symptoms (not specified) and then it appeared she was getting better so they didnt take her to the hospital. and the couple says they have nothing against doctors; the father even had some medical training. and im not talking about some type of religious or spiritual medical training, but modern medical training. yes, the parents were probably idiots, but i think you're way too readily blaming prayer when the parents clearly just underestimated the seriousness of their daughter's illness.
scientologists are bigger threats to their children then this couple.

But this hate is not directed at the group, it is directed at the perpetrators of a great misdeed; Like it or not that girls' parents are guilty of inaction, inaction that lead to death, surely the greatest crime of all.
Their "faith" has nothing to do with it.

No it's not. Hating morons for being morons is a sign that you yourself are not. The parents screwed up, badly, and as a result their child is dead and from their statements on the event it seems clear they haven't learned the lesson. I have no problem with religion or religious people, as long as it's not taken too far, and I don't blame the religion for what happened. However I do think religions should take note of events like these because I know some like saying "Whatever you need God will provide." which is fine they just need to explain that this doesn't mean they can sit on their ***** and do nothing and God will make everything ok.
"people with religious beliefs shouldn't be allowed to have children"
Because, evidently, all religious family units frequently experience a tragic, unexpected death like this because of their negligence, and it's always down purely to their religious beliefs, not, y'know, because the mixture of their troubling inane stupidity and religion was a dangerous one.

the couple said they have nothing against doctors and the father had medical training. i think you guys need to stop being so ready to blame prayer for a couple underestimating the seriousness of their daughter's illness; a mistake that was probably easy to make considering the father did have medical training.

I would agree with you. But what is wrong is when people use a story like this to generalize against a group of people

Are you honestly suggesting that we should excuse this act of utter stupidity because one of them knew CPR? *I* know Basic First Aid too, but that doesn't make me a medical expert.
Let me put this another way:
PARENTS: "We just noticed a tiredness within the past two weeks," she said Wednesday. "And then, just the day before and that day (she died), it suddenly just went to a more serious situation. We stayed fast in prayer then. We believed that she would recover. We saw signs that to us, it looked like she was recovering."
DOCTORS: "She had probably been ill for about a month, suffering symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, loss of appetite and weakness,"
I can understand that, as a religious person, you feel the need to protect their actions, but ultimately you can't as there is nothing to protect: They decided that God would fix their child, and if that failed then Daddy would use his Basic First Aid skills to rescue her. In the end it was the other members of the family that called for professional medical help, family members who were probably no less religious and clearly far more intelligent.
"Do not test the Lord" Remember?
"She had probably been ill for about a month, suffering symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, loss of appetite and weakness,"
"I can understand that, as a religious person, you feel the need to protect their actions, but ultimately you can't as there is nothing to protect"
not at all. religious people that would do things that they're acused of, make other religious people look bad, if anything i would try to make them out to be villains more then you would. nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, loss of appetite are all things an 11 year old could hide from her parents and theres about a million possible reasons she could have for hiding it.
and im fairly certain a cop has more medical training then just being able to give cpr.
FORMER cop, which calls into question how up to date his First Aid training is.
First Aid training is no substitute for Qualified medicine.
The Child was home schooled, easily doubling the amount of time she was in her parents presence, doubling the difficulty she would have had in hiding those symptoms for a month, especially as her parents seemed to be especially "proactive" in her life.
Why would she hide the symptoms? Did she think she was pregnant?
"You shall not put the LORD your God to the test."
Testing God in the forbidden way to which this biblical extract is referring would be something like stabbing your kid deliberately to see if God'll save them from death. What I mean is, deliberately and explicitly creating a situation in which to challenge God's power, and to hold Him responsible should it all backfire. Being thrown into a situation beyond your control and trying to cope the best you can to save innocent lives is not testing God.
There are a million and one quotes to challenge you using that one to support your idea that the bible encourages us to stand back and let God handle everything. One could even argue that knowing your child ought to see a doctor, but refusing to take them could break the commandment "Do not kill" as you should be well aware that in doing so you are letting him or her die - permitting death, so to speak.
"First Aid training is no substitute for Qualified medicine."
i agree, but first aid training means that they believe in the use of modern medicine. so it most likely isnt a lie when they say they have nothing against doctors.
"The Child was home schooled, easily doubling the amount of time she was in her parents presence, doubling the difficulty she would have had in hiding those symptoms for a month, especially as her parents seemed to be especially "proactive" in her life."
arent nearly all these symptoms also symptoms of bulimia? and teenagers can hide that illness for years; 1 month is nothing.
if she was sheltered, she could of thought God was punishing her for masturbating, ashamed, she hid it from her parents. theres really near infinite reasons for a kid, especially a sheltered one, to hide such things from her parents. i cant pretend to know her intentions, just like you shouldnt pretend to know the parent's intentions.
First aid is in case of an emergency, not for diagnosing problems. That's why God gave us Doctors.
The parents probably now know they made a mistake, but hope that God will forgive them. I really would like to know what their respective minister thinks of them, and so on.
"i agree, but first aid training means that they believe in the use of modern medicine. so it most likely isnt a lie when they say they have nothing against doctors."
And yet the child had not seen a Doctor since the age of three.
"arent nearly all these symptoms also symptoms of bulimia? and teenagers can hide that illness for years; 1 month is nothing. "
Fair point, I hadn't thought of that.

But I know their actions, and their actions tell me they chose Prayer over Medicine.
