No, mathematically, that's not correct. If you take away the same amount from each, you are changing the proportion of values to each. E.g., if you have 5 and 10, and 5 is 50% of 10, and you take away 3 from both, 2 isn't 50% of 7, is it? The proportional relative differences between the values has changed, and this is what matters in Eliminations. Division keeps the relative differences between the different numbers the same, e.g. with the 5 and 10 example again, if you divide both by 5, 1 is still 50 % of 2, the the relative proportions of each of the numbers to one another is maintained.
