Topic: Question for Mechanical experts.

You have a vehicle with four 40 horsepower engines, each to a separate wheel. Is the vehicles actual horsepower 40, 160, or something in between?

Think about it. Multiple Diesel-Electric train engines are often linked together to pull heavier loads. If horsepower wasn't additive, linking engines together would not have an effect.

40 is the wrong answer.

You may be wrong Otto. Consider, if they use 1 train engine for say 20 train cars... or some other valuation, it could be a per weight ratio.

Acoording to your description, that vehicle has 4 (from each engine) times 40 horsepower, thus 160.

I'm stunned you, a mathematical deity, can't figure that out...

The amount of horse power has nothing to do with how much it's carrying...

I mean, if a horse is pulling 1 or 26 carts, it will still have 1 horse power.

(not entirely true, 1 horse does not per se have 1 horse power, but you get where i'm coming from)

At uni we got structural problems, for example, kg, m, kN, etc, sweet. Then we got this lbs, yards, inches, lbs per sq inch, etc problem thrown at us. It was stupid!

Given that the imperial system of measurements was devised and still used in everyday life by the British, and the British are European it would be quite a strange thing to claim that Europeans know nothing of horsepower. Imperial units are retarded though.
