It's going to take at least 20-30 years for the republican party to recover from the tarnish it's garnered over the past 15 years. The fact is there is a huge generation gap between those who are 30 and under and everyone else. Also the party is sevearly lacking in the minority vote category, something it has been trying to fix for decades but has failed every time.

Personally I would prefer if sone party controls congress while the other controls the presidency. It forces compromise among the masses. Having Bush as president with a republican majority devestated this country. And my fear is that a democratic congress with Obama could be just as bad. However I think this extreem is necessary to undo some of the damage done over the past 8 years and bring us to more of a middle ground. I figure at least 4-6 years of a democratic congress before the republicans regain at least one house which will force compromise once again. A lot of things that are being promosed quite honestly should have been done decades ago.
Upgrading our electrical grids, money for high speed rail, enforcement of enviromental laws. These are issues that the republican party let lax for nearly 20 years, and we need to catch back up.
In the end though the economy should recover nicely. I doubt any republican canidate can knock Obama off next electin, so he'll be in office for 2 terms. The budget should be beginning to balance out by then. As long as congress doesn't go off and start cutting taxes as soon as he's out of office we hsould be fine. Our priority over the lext 30 years should be to pay off the national debt above anythign else. It's a matter of natinal security that we do so.
