Topic: XP Question, HD Capacity-Detection

I have a 250 GB SATA HDD and after trying to install XP, it only detected 160 GB.  Now, I've looked around on the net and I've learned that I would have to install XP SP1 (at least) for the full 250 GB HD to be detected.  What I want to know is if I can install my version of XP and then download/install SP1, would the OS now be able to detect the full 250 GB?  I'm not quite sure since I figure that once you partition the HDD, that's the capacity of that partition.  I really, really don't want to go out and fork out an extra $100 for my machine (It's already at $750).  Now, if I do have to get XP SP1/SP2, should I get the 64-bit or 32-bit OS?  (Vista is not an option).

Re: XP Question, HD Capacity-Detection

Okay, I have MSI's K9A2 AM2+/AM2 motherboard, so if their bios can't handle a 250 GB HD, something is seriously missing.  Second, I have AMD's x64 5000+ Brisbane, so it is indeed a 64-bit processor.  Other than that, I have not checked whether BIOs detects the HD @ 250.  Once I can find a PSU for it, I'll check.

Hit it with a mallet until people run in and grab your arm!

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.
Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.

Re: XP Question, HD Capacity-Detection

Thanks, but like I said, until I get a PSU, it'll be awhile before I can report results.  It's a brand new machine built from the ground up and the key component it is missing is a 400W PSU (for stability).  The one in my current machine is 350W, but I'd rather not chance it with the stability of my machine, especially since the GPU is the Radeon HD 3870 and I overclocked my Brisbane to 3 Ghz.

Re: XP Question, HD Capacity-Detection

I have plenty of experience with this problem tongue What you need to do is this:

Preferably, you should download the SP2 of windows, and slipstream it into the XP install you have. The 250 GB is then implemented into XP's install. That's the best solution imo..

Alternativly, you can install SP1 or SP2 on an already set up windows. Then use this proggy:

Although, I never had 1 large partition covering the 137GB (wich is in fact the true boundary), I think you can write on it.. Although, the best temporary solution is to make a windows partition of 130GB or less..

Anyhow, I think the first solution is the best by far wink

EDIT: Whatever you do, do NOT get Vista wink

Re: XP Question, HD Capacity-Detection

What do you mean by "slipstream it into the XP install" ?

Re: XP Question, HD Capacity-Detection

I just wanted to say thanks, guys.  That NLite program worked well, despite the fact that I still had to configure things like my resolution and account name.  The custom cd detected 238 GB, which I believe is exactly what it needed to detect.  So, thank you very much. smile

Re: XP Question, HD Capacity-Detection

So, did you use my slipstreaming suggestion? tongue

And for that reason and that reason only IC rocks:D

I'm going to be nicer promise

Re: XP Question, HD Capacity-Detection

Yes, I used your slipstream method, WFS, using the program arms provided.  Thank you very much.  It saved a lot of time and money and my $850 machine can now be used to do my homework and play some video games.  Btw, while I'm on the topic of my computer, is it a bad idea to OC your processor by adjusting only your FSB?

glad it helped smile
