Topic: So Antarctica Broke, and Stuff.

So one of Antactica's few remaining ice shelves has lost a massive chunk and it looks like the whole of the ice shelf could follow it.
It was thought that the Ice shelf would remain stable for another 15 years.
If it does go this will be number 7.

There's a 15 second advert at the start of the video.

"A vast hunk of floating ice has broken away from the Antarctic peninsula, threatening the collapse of a much larger ice shelf behind it, in a development that has shocked climate scientists.

Satellite images show that about 160 square miles of the Wilkins ice shelf has been lost since the end of February, leaving the ice interior now "hanging by a thread".

The collapsing shelf suggests that climate change could be forcing change much more quickly than scientists had predicted.

"The ice shelf is hanging by a thread," said Professor David Vaughan of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). "We'll know in the next few days or weeks what its fate will be."

The Wilkins shelf covers an area of 5,600 square miles (14,500 sq km). It is now protected by just a thin thread of ice between two islands.

Vaughan was a member of the team that predicted in 1993 that global warming could cause the Wilkins shelf to collapse within 30 years.

The shedding of peripheral floating ice shelves has occurred elsewhere on the peninsula, allowing inland ice to move towards the sea and cause rising sea levels.

Some areas of the frozen continent have been cooler in recent years, and have added ice through accumulated snowfall. This year, the thin floating layer of sea ice that forms each austral winter and fades in summer has in fact been larger than usual, in contrast to the Arctic.

The shedding of peripheral floating ice shelves has occurred elsewhere on the peninsula, allowing inland ice to move towards the sea and cause rising sea levels.

This is explained by other, true, scientists... There is such a huge increase in the ice on that continent that it is forcing ice out from the core. Yes rising sea levels indeed... and shrinking also due to the ice being made.

Re: So Antarctica Broke, and Stuff.

I'm going to address the part of your post that doesn't repeat what the article already says:

"Thats actually false reporting, the Antartic has only cooled. There is legions of evidence of this."

Uh huh: http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsroom/NewImages/images.php3?img_id=17257 Ooh look, warm bits!

"In my city, today, this very morning, we had snow. March 28th is the date. Snow. Our mountains have 200% to 500% of the snowpack if I use math like the climatologists, but in truth it's 150% to 400% of the typical year. There has been the strongest winter in a long long time."

We had a late winter too, it feels like they get later every year. Anyone would think the climate was changing.

"Note also the utter retraction of the words "Global Warming"? Yeah thats because they know it's not happening. So they use "Climate Change" which has been happening since humankind was put on this planet."

That is because Globa Warming is an inaccurate term. When the Gulf Stream finally breaks completely the UK will lose it's warming benefit, and we will cool, so the Warming is not global but the climate is undeniably changing.

"There has been ice shelves in the past, they went and came also... It is a part of the natural cycle of this planet."

Which suddenly accellerated over the last 200 years.

I guess I should be worried about this, me living below sea level and all. But I just don't seem to care, odd. yikes

Re: So Antarctica Broke, and Stuff.

US? Foret the US, Canada has gotten it even worse. I'm in Montreal, we're used to snow. We've been all but shut down about 3-4 times this year. We just about set new records this year. Winter was pretty much on time and hung around late.

Very simply, there was an ice age, and look, there isn't! What would that be? Oh, right, climate change! Wether or not we as a race have acelerated the process, the warming of the planet is a NATURAL process. In the days of the dinosaurs it's theorised that the entire world was effectively tropical, then something happened, and the planet froze and went into an ice age. Everything else, including out current shifts, has simply been part of the long process of the planet returning to it's true, "normal", state.

Re: So Antarctica Broke, and Stuff.

No way. It's global freezing. We still have snow and snowfall... at the end of March! Yes, snow and it's supposed to be Spring! How is that global warming?

It's global freezing yo.

Re: So Antarctica Broke, and Stuff.

global warming does not mean we will not have winters. If you have not noticed spring and fall have gotten shorter(temperature wise) we dont have as much of that cool 1-2 months we used to have during those seasons. I live in chicago and it snowed like 3-4 inches in the middle of march. But thats because of global warming. It causing extreme temperatures. REally cold in the winter and really hot in the summer. And after a while spring and fall will be eliminated to like a few weeks if that. Weather will just change very rapidly.

Whatever you want to call the meteorological cahnges, they cause weather extremes, not just warming or cooling. That's basic.

Re: So Antarctica Broke, and Stuff.

To the people who say "the term global warming was incorrect" I have this statement.

The same damned scientists who PUSHED, I mean SEVERELY PUSHED about it being a Global Warming, and the entire world will be under water type prophecies (at first, now since reduced, then retracted) are the ones pushing man made climate change. I would get lynch squads together if you wish to seem more reasonable and sane than you seem following those quacks. How many billions will you give them until you realize they are some of the greatest scam artists in the world?

Re: So Antarctica Broke, and Stuff.

there's an easy and convenient but wrong answer to every tough question, with global warming it's "but omg it's been chilly outside today"; you needn't compare apples and oranges, just because you're having a cold day in your concrete surroundings doesn't mean there is no overall increase in temperatures

however you explain it, there is no denying that there is an upwards trend; now this doesn't mean you have to actually believe it's fully man made, we could just be a couple of drops in a bucketload of normal cyclical increases or whatever;

but there is such a thing as the cautionary principle; you take measures based on a pessimistic assessment and hope for a better than expected outcome

this is really hard for many people to understand because they are infected with consumerist short sightedness (which also lead to the US credit crunch), but it's not a good idea to set policy based on the hope that everything is allright, and everything will be allright in the future, that there are no limits to growth and you can maximise everything that can be maximised without conserving and stuff

Would Black Wing like to inform us of his souces, or at least tell us when the planet will stop warming? Will it be before the Gulf Stream breaks? I don't want to move south to avoid the imminent cold only to not have it break, the prices down there are horrendous!

Re: So Antarctica Broke, and Stuff.

The climate is changing.... March has now been officially decalred a summer month here, where it had been the first month of autumn.

BW: Once again, is not a key compnonent of maximising profit to reduce costs. Is not reducing costs the same as reducing energy consumption? IS not reducing energy consumption a key component of combatting so called climate change? Maybe it is good for everyone?

Perhaps you remember why the ozone layer stoped depleting? Cause everyone banned freones. Othervice it wouldnt be very nice here right now. Meaning that if we didnt fix it it wouldnt have stoped depleting. And the oil will run out soon, in 30 years perhaps, who knows exactly. But it is quite clear that it will run out since no new oil is made....
