Ignoring the many irrelevant posts, The bow was overdone, a SLIGHT bow, like that given to the Queen would have been fine, but to that point you're putting yourself as thier lesser, which he shouldn't do, plain and simple.

If that were true, then every one of those leaders would be bowing to Obama whenever they entered the US to meet him. 
That's the whole point, the USA is equal to Saudi Arabia and our heads of state get equal honors.
And if you wanna pretend a monarch trumps a republican president then you just pissed on France and Russia too.
i dont understand why you would bow to a monarch and not an elected official in an equally powerful position. what is the intent of the bow? is it a sign of respect? a sign that you are what their service? a sign of reverence? what purpose does a bow have that would make it appropriate for presidents to do towards monarchs but not for other leaders to do towards presidents?
It is protocol.. not more not less.

Protocol dictates that all should BOW To the US President.......for the US secures all.
So all the Euro Heads of state should bow to the US President.
NATO should have a Throne Room for the US President, or his Representative when the NATO meets in Brussels.
And there should be a PALACE in place of the UN in New York......for the US Delegation. They all enter and bow to the US Reps be for session.
After all, there is no UN w/o America.

I think what would put this thread in perspective is this: do any other heads of state bow to the saudi king? Does gordon brown or sarkozy bow to the king? If so then obama was right in his bow. If no other head of state does this then obama was not right because obviously it is not proper protocol.

Obama basically walked in and erased almost 7 years of mistrust and disdain. As predictable as it might have been, this is still amazing.

President Obama is no longer leader of the USA only indeed, he just took back the role of leader of the free world that is the burden of american presidents for decades now. A smell of Reagan in the air - again. And it feels damn good.

It's not a matter of anything but respect to a King whom no matter where you come from, you're taught to bow before a king. The only problem is that a lot of people in this world feel that they are better or if not better, no less than equal to another person. This is why people don't open doors for other people, say please or thank you or sorry, stay faithful in relationships or let people into traffic.

Shut up! No American President is leader of the free world, dammit! I'd love for a President to come "lead" me. Unless I was on American soil I would politely say something roughly along the lines of 'no, but thanks anyway'.
