active duty means on call depending on what happens
12 hours can be a short day for a combat assignment

What if you're doing an admin job?
12 hours a day is standard for many jobs..... Personally depending on what's going on some days I can be as low as 7.5 or higher than 12.
In the military you are there for fighting wars. If you get attacked are you going to go sit out the back for a rest because you have worked more than 12 hours? If you are a civvie in an admin job then maybe your hours will be controlled. If you are a soldier doing an admin job, you are a soldier first and admin person second.
Don't worry about it Justinian you wouldn't last 10 minutes in the military.
There is a temp 27 hour position all soldiers have to pull ultimately, over 8 years it adds up how many times you do it.
cq
you think they punched time cards on Guadacanal??
yeah BW tell us, how often you refused to get in a tank because you'd worked too many consecutive hours...
"Colonel, we been fixing tread motors since 8 this morning, now I'm gonna have a beer and a ceegar, goddamit!"
/cut to sad sack and his whole platoon running five miles in full field gear in the rain at night, nobody saying anything, just staring at him
there's a movie called "Patton" where they mention a US division is gonna march 90 miles in 72 hours and then fight once they get there.
also there's a book "Marines of Autumn" by James Brady where a Marine talks about the postwar Army that drilled four hours a day if the weather was good, and then gets its ass kicked.
the military, since the 1980s, has tried to be an outfit that is prepared to kick ass, not compare favorably to Panda Express for a quality of life experience
to the original question.
work a 12 hour day ??
Not really... But....
guard duty is an 8 hour day. 4 on, 8 off, ...... or even 2 on 4 or 1 on 2 off in bad weather.
When on mission/task..... you do 72 hour consecutive on call for any mission.
This is usually followed by 24-48 hours of down time.
12 hour day ?? Only when needed.....maybe prep for an inspection or maintenance after an exercise or mission....
That is usually followed by 3-4 days of down time though.

As to what YELL mentioned above:
Pattons 3rd army did a complete left turn (Not an easy task to turn an army) and marched 100 Miles through blizzard conditions to relieve the 101st AB Division that was encircled by a German SS Panzer Army..... this was during the battle of the bulge.
Yea, Patton's Lead elements of the US 3rd Army marched 100 miles in 3 days, through a blizzard and went directly into battle. I believe it was the 1st US Armored Division.
During the battle of MARKET GARDEN (covered in the movie "A Bridge to far").
The US Army marched up the River Road 100 miles, fighting German Units the entire way to relieve the 3rd of four Bridges....the Bridge at Niemegan (sic?).
They did that in 3 days as well, ON FOOT !!!, and then battled for, and took the bridge, intact from elements of the 2nd SS Panzer div.
12 hour day.
I know Submariners, not sure of the rest of the Navy, when at sea on patrol do 12hours on 12 hours off shifts. They do have reliefs on shift though.
ie: 3-4 sonar men, communications, navigators, etc.
Of course during battle stations all are at the ready...... who knows how long that can be.
Factory workers also often work 12 hours shifts Justinian.
Academics often work 12 hours days. Successful business leaders often work 12 hours a day.
The simple fact is that in this world, if you want to make money and succeed, you have to work.
normal for navy (at least german but i think its nato standart) is "3 guard system" from 8 to 16:00 everyone works..
shifts are
12:00 - 18:00
18:00 - 24:00
24:00-04:00
04:00 - 08:00
08:00-12:00
so it may happen that u work 14 out of 16 hours.
I see you guys need a more graphical understanding of what I mean.

If you think our imperial troops should live like this, then there's something wrong with you. They are inhumane living conditions, and it's no wonder why the army has trouble satisfying its recruitment standards. At least the army is improving the conditions, but you get my point.
As for 12 hours of sleep, ok maybe you have a point. Many people are working long hours and you can still live a comfortable life, but when our military personnel are sleep deprived (except troops in combat who are up 72 hours at a time) their mental faculties are compromised.
Actually, if the army was more assertive with giving soldiers civilized living conditions on base, then maybe they wouldn't have a problem with attracting new recruits and then people could work less than 12 hours a day.
>They are inhumane living conditions
The long hours of missions serve a purpose, usually it's to avoid detection. If we made soldiers work normal working hours, some missions would not be possible. Then the enemy gets an advantage and our people die. "Humane" working conditions don't mean shit when you're working to keep yourself + your friends + your country alive.

I don't think you bothered to consider my point. I specifically referred to non-combat troops. Of course exceptions need to be made for troops in combat (i.e infantry), but most army personnel are not serving in combat.
".the Bridge at Niemegan (sic?)"
Nijmegen, but props for trying! Great movie btw.
Then it's an issue of simple discipline.
Eventually, when the US really needs people (even if they're line position logistics people or some other administrative work), these guys will be required to work MUCH longer than 12 hours a day. For example, logistics people would be essential for any effective offensive. Supply personnel are definitely essentials right before and during combat operations.
The only people who may not be affected by spikes in combat are those in positions such as accounting and legal services... and I dare you to say lawyers and accountants work only 8 hours a day even in civilian service. ![]()
Anyway, if there is a time when people will be working for 16, 20, or even 24 hours a day, a sudden transition would be a shock to the system for people working 8 hours a day. That's double the normal work schedule! And that shock would happen at the worst moment possible (major offensive). The 12 hour work day helps to alleviate it.
I retired from the U. S. Army. 11.5 hrs. a day in garrison is typical. In the field 24 hrs. a day with 6 hrs. rest (not sleep) is all that is required and that 6 hrs. is not necessarily taken at the same time. It usually gets broken up into 2-3 hr. increments. No it is not inhumane. We were not in prison where you liberals think prisoners are mistreated. We are volunteers and do what is necessary to complete the mission.
We are not Europeans. We are Americans. We know freedom isn't FREE.

Re: Military Question
Come on, 12+ hours is inhumane treatment.

Im not in the military, but I work at a convient store called QT (Midwest america region(40ish of Fortune 500 Companies)) and I have worked +16hours in a day.
When work needs to be done it needs to be done. I just get shot at less ![]()
Ask how long doctors work in the medical field and nurses for that matter. Many have 18 hour shifts. Just hope you don't go in @ hour 17 and some have like a day and a half they have to say @ the hospital on call.
