1. Massive Oil formed in Tethys Sea -- Geology

There's also lots of heat and pressure.
I don't know whether thunderstorms can heat stuff up enough but it certainly shouldn't have a lot of pressure.

Thunderstorm Lightning has made orbs of plasma, gas that is well beyond 5000 centigrade...

Yea, I'd say it's hot enough big_smile

As for pressure, most biomass ends up in bottom of the ocean, where there is TONS of pressure...

The Lightning would just provide instance and flash point heating...



Also, Sharks smell electricity, so no surprise that it could be everywhere in that water (the electricity)

So put alot of methane in a very high pressure chamber, fire bolts of lightning at it and get a tiny bit of oil?

Maybe if you could build something like a boat that would float off the coast of florida or in the artic that and place a gaint metal rod it would surley atract plenty of lightning.

All depends on what length hydrocarbons you want, vs which are most abundant from your synthesis. If you can polymerise hydrocarbon chains efficiently, then you would probably be able to produce much better quality oil for its intended purpose (less need for fractioning), so age would be fairly irrelevant.

For the record I was saying this for commercial use, more as a explanation for NATURAL formation, and that it is likely still going on. If so, it could lead to a better refinery...

there is no doubt that we could make synthetic oil (I have no facts but I believe it smile) and not just by coal liquification or whatever, which is perfectly doable and fairly economical, but to synthesise it from like live organic material. If we can synthesise diamonds we should be able to do this too, but as has been said the question is can we synthesise it this way economically, which we probably can't

I compared the relative ease from using other fossil materials as precursors for making synthetic oil with the difficulty of using actual live organic matter as a percursor for synthetic oil; but I do assume this is possible as we can also make synthetic diamonds

its most likely possible, but it would make alot more sense to spend resources on making a different fuels more viable after all, oil is causing big problems with the environment.
