Topic: Canada

Why is Baker Lake, a city with a population of 30,000 or so, on a map of Canada?

The city I live in has 70,000, and it's not on the USA map.

Re: Canada

Also, what can the Governor General do if he/she is pissed at the Prime Minister, and by pissed I mean devoted to bring him/her down?

Re: Canada

PS: I'm taking a class on Canada, and the country seems funny.

Regional conflict
Quebec thinking it should have special status
A dual executive (PM/GG)
First provinces that formed Canada that have at least 40% more seats than ones that were added subsequent to the confederation (e.g Alberta has 6 and Nova Scotia has 10)

Re: Canada

who the F cares about you being on the map?

No it's not, it is a conspiracy to prevent his town to get into the map, Towns like Brockway, Ogdenville and North Haverbrook are in but they all got in with a MONORAIL!

Not many people know this, but I own the first radio in Springfield. Not much on the air then, just Edison reciting the alphabet over and over. "A" he'd say; then "B." "C" would usually follow...

"Why is Baker Lake, a city with a population of 30,000 or so, on a map of Canada?

consider the ratio of 30,000:30,000,000 as opposed to 70,000:300,000,000

"Also, what can the Governor General do if he/she is pissed at the Prime Minister, and by pissed I mean devoted to bring him/her down?"

Vote against their wishes in the event of a tie in the House of Commons.  That is to say if a issue is voted on and it's 50:50 the Governor General gets the final say.

"PS: I'm taking a class on Canada, and the country seems funny.

The Regional conflict results from the fact that we have so little in common with one another. It isn't like the states where people don't change much as you cross the border entering a different province is like entering a separate country.

Quebec's french what do you expect

Yeah that's a little crazy

Hmm...  Scale has nothing to do with it.

When you have a huge expanse of nothingness.....Canada....you are GREATFUL to be able to put SOMETHING on the map.

Hey Canada is not a large expanse of nothingness, we've got rocks and trees up the yin yang

Re: Canada

Baker Lake is likely on the map, because it's one of the largest cities in the North. By comparison, the capital of Nunavut, Iqaluit has a population of 6000. The capital of Yukon, Whitehorse, has a population of 22000.

Regional conflict happens everywhere. It's probably more noticeable in Canada because of a couple of factors. The first is that we don't have too many provinces. The second is that the majority of the population is concentrated in Ontario and Quebec (60% or so).

The third is...well...if you're interested, read up on "transfer payments".

Section 36(2) of the Constitution Act 1982

    (2) Parliament and the government of Canada are committed to the principle of making equalization payments to ensure that provincial governments have sufficient revenues to provide reasonably comparable levels of public services at reasonably comparable levels of taxation. (96)

Those get lots of people (re: Albertans) steaming mad big_smile If you want to read a bit about them:

The dual executive isn't really a dual executive. The last time a Governor General disobeyed the wishes of the PM was in the 1920s with the King-Byng crisis.

Your tally of seats is somewhat off. Wiki lists the guaranteed minimum number of seats for each province.

Re: Canada

Old thread, but you guys need to get your facts straight:
If it's a 50:50 split on a vote in Paraliment, the speaker of the house will cast the deciding vote, not the Governor General. The GG is a purely ceremonial position.

As for Quebec being given special status? That claim is based upon the fact that the majority of Quebeckers are a minority within the country, and have a slightly different history then white, english specking Canadians.

I just found it funny the first 2 replies to the thread, was by the person who started the thread. What a lonely guy.

Why use your own fleets when you can use anothers?

Re: Canada

Oh yea.... Quebeckers are different.

They are White, French and English speaking, Canadians.

Same as the TEXICANS, or CREOL, or ........... any significant large portion of different Americans that come together as one.

But, leave it to the only difference being that they speak FRENCH be the wrench in the entire fabric of being "Canadian."

Being "French Canadian" is not enough......... no they want to BELIGIUM the Country.
