Topic: IC politics forum equally split?

Is it just me or do i see a lot more conservatives now that Obama is elected president? It used to  be that this was a purely leftist forum and all who tried to voice their conservative opinions were treated like heretics speaking against the medieval catholic church! Now it seems that it is evenly split between conservatives and liberals. Is it just a coincidence that this happens when we have a new liberal leader?

Re: IC politics forum equally split?

I think it's just you, to be honest... unless you can name some conservatives who just showed up in the forums...

Re: IC politics forum equally split?

Actually, a lot of conservatives on IC-Politics just happened to come back from absence some time after the election. V.Kemp came back, and so did Key (somewhat), Acolyte, and Flint. We still have JA, House Jarvin, Black Wing, GOP, and a few other people still.

For a while I was pretty much the only conservative, lol. But then I'm an odd conservative, because I'm not interested in the religious and social authoritarian crap. I'm also anal about pragmatism.

Re: IC politics forum equally split?

I'm more of a moderate myself. I distaste religious and social extremism on both sides of the isle. I hope the Republican party gets their act together and returns to the platform of sound fiscal responsibility and honest government, something that they slowly abandoned over the past 15 years. sad

Re: IC politics forum equally split?

In europe you would be split into 4 diffrent factions

Not many people know this, but I own the first radio in Springfield. Not much on the air then, just Edison reciting the alphabet over and over. "A" he'd say; then "B." "C" would usually follow...

Re: IC politics forum equally split?

Specifically, I just want government to be small. It should concern itself primarily with law/order, infrastructure, security, education, and maybe a few other things. While I'm willing to make compromises, I can definitely say our government is larger than it should be.

I want

Individualism
Minimal regulation of the market
Pragmatic foreign policy
Small and efficient government
Meritocracy

Liberals go too far with their social programs, equality and providing a minimum lifestyle. I can make compromises on the minimal lifestyle part, like on education, but providing financial assistance for families to get a home blatantly crosses the line. What also infuriates me about Liberals is their "save the world" attitude. They just tick me off when they want to bus inner city kids to the suburbs schools or to invite new immigrants who are neither desired for their skills or education - but just to add to America's diversity...

But unlike conservatives, I am totally apathetic on religion. Let there be general tolerance of religion, but keep it out of government decision-making. Decision making should aim to deliver the best results, and strictly rely on empirical data.

Re: IC politics forum equally split?

If only companies behaved themselves to allow for minimal market regulation. -.-

Social Security should be privatized and we should put more emphasis on reducing the national debt and bring fiscal responsibility back to government. I have no problem with helping people when their down for a "short" period of time, I do have a problem with supporting people for years upon years.

Re: IC politics forum equally split?

I tend to drop in and out, schedule permitting. Work keeps me busy these days, and being married doesn't help my leisure time. However, over the years I have grown considerably more extreme and disillusioned with not just the US government, but government in general. This has lead me to draw my own category, at least as far as this board is concerned, since I am the only other anarcho-capitalist present that I am aware of.

My view, though, is that present government regulation changed the incentives of CEOs to being short-sighted hoarders. So in a sense, government regulation caused it, and now we need more regulation... It's like a web that creates more problems as it increases in complexity as you try to patch it up.

Agreed. I have no problem helping people who fell down for a while, but a lot of people abuse the system. But as we tried to patch up those abuses, we created a huge bureaucracy that substantially increased the cost.

Acolyte,

Hehe. I'm disillusioned that hiring paramilitary groups for protection could lead to a lot of competition (war) and coercion.

So how's life and the wifey? Any babies yet?

Re: IC politics forum equally split?

So without regulation CEOs WOULDN'T be tempted to hoard?

If A knew that ther gambles and mess ups would be covered by the government, it's not hard to imagine A becoming greedy and reckless.

But if A knew that costly decisions lead to costly outcomes (and their removal from the board of directors) and there was no one to helicopter them, then they have incentive to be cautious and plan more strategically.

When their returns are on the line, both CEOs and shareholders have incentive to invest in good of the company.

When there is no such incentive (a helicopter government or too many restrictions), then they have incentive to be short-sighted and take what they can as fast as they can.

Re: IC politics forum equally split?

@Justinian I

I don't claim to know how a free market on law and order would actually look like, and anyone who does is still just speculating. But I /do/ know the dynamic process of the market would inevitably "find a way". This is not to be confused with the religious zeal for faith; rather, I would say I have as much faith in nature as I do in the market. Private protection agencies are but one possible vehicle for the /maintenance/ of order, themselves possibly an extension of the insurance industry or at least closely related. But that debate is neither here nor there.

Life is good, despite the economy. No kids yet, but we are considering the prospect (I am not getting any younger, after all). Right now, both of our incomes are integral to supporting us, but this may change (for better or worse) within the year. For now, we just eat-in more than we used to. wink

Re: IC politics forum equally split?

Acolyte,

Fair enough. But I am honestly skeptical that it could ever work. One reason is that coercive power tends to get abused, if you know what I mean.

Good to know you're above water and doing okay smile. When you have kids, please remember to have at least three. The world needs an increase in intelligent people!

So where do you work? I'm guessing some sort of biological work?

Skoe,

No, it's essential to an optimally productive and minimally expensive social organization. It's just not valued enough, because we're sadly moving toward a "nanny state."

Re: IC politics forum equally split?

I miss Alcoholics Anonymous, the Brit university student who drove the beer delivery truck.

I don't think there's much of a split in here. There's a sad lack of adults of dissenting opinions (dissenting on the major questions--lots of us have relatively minor differences in position that we just don't care to go over in any more detail) to discuss anything with. We have here a few of the stereotypical "this is the way the world SHOULD be, so therefore this is OBVIOUSLY and CLEARLY the ONE, IDEAL way to do things!" liberals. But they're relatively uneducated kids (no, going to a college does not MAKE you educated) who don't really put into any sort of discussion. When someone posts the specific foundations where they disagree, no discussion of those foundations arises, just a bunch of stupid insults.

1LT beating me? Not possible in his dreams.

Black Wing can beat me on a portion of Conservatism, but not in total capacity. The Yell can beat me half the time with his very insightful information, but I get as much as he does so it equals out, but then I also post much more than him in general and in quantity tongue

anywayz,
Haven't seen JA for a long time now. And the forum is less active for the last few years anyway. But it idd makes sense that the opposite side off the ruling fraction is more active. Sounds perfectly logical to me.
