Massive Oil Deposit Could Increase US reserves by 10x
America is sitting on top of a super massive 200 billion barrel Oil Field that could potentially make America Energy Independent and until now has largely gone unnoticed. Thanks to new technology the Bakken Formation in North Dakota could boost America

YAy - ! Maybe they can stop invading countries for oil now big_smile

Re: Woot!!!111

Im just waiting for the day congress passes an emergency measure to tap the Alaskan oil fields.

Re: Woot!!!111

YAY for American oil, it won't change prices where I live but good for you.

Seriously though this is a very good thing because it gives America, and possibly other countries if they decide not to horde it, A source of oil outside of OPEC forcing them to stop being pricks.

There are 10 kinds of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who don't.

Re: Woot!!!111

Alaska has oil fields ??   Are you serious ?  or joking ?

@ DPS, supply and demand....toss in futures trading as well.
That drives price.

Give another major source, more supply, and the price comes down.

Plenty of major fields out there, that are not being tapped.

Re: Woot!!!111

"Alaska has oil fields?"

yep, and there are also oil fields underneath the great lakes; but environmentalists have severely limited the refining of oil from Alaska and has completely prevented the drilling for oil underneath the great lakes.

Re: Woot!!!111

Yes, Alaska does have oil reserves. However, in an earth and environmental science class I had a few semesters back, the professor said that people tend to exaggerate the size of these reserves, and that if all of the fields were tapped and pumped in Alaska, the oil produced would only be able to quell our massive consumption of oil for roughly two years (not the world's consumption for two years, but the United States' consumption for two years - so the reserves in Alaska will be able to provide one quarter of the world's demand for two years [yes, the U.S. really consumes that much of the world's oil]). The world's going to be a different place in 20-30 years.

Re: Woot!!!111

+ the oil fields in alaska are not such an awsomme investment. They only yield twice the energy you put in it while you get 13:1 from regualar oil

edit:

These are from 2005 ish.
1World     80,290,000
2United States     20,800,000
3European Union     14,580,000
4China     6,930,000

US= 300mil population
EU=500mil
China=1,3bil

So yes America is sucking out the oil out of the world at an extraordinary rate.

Not many people know this, but I own the first radio in Springfield. Not much on the air then, just Edison reciting the alphabet over and over. "A" he'd say; then "B." "C" would usually follow...

ROFL......first off, "The Professor said........

Thats the 1st red (Pun inteded) flag (pun intended again) waving (very much pun intended).   NEVER believe your Profesor

Basically, if we can cover 10% of US Consumption of oil, that would mean the field would last 20 years.....
with todays technology.   Thats using your professor's logic by the way.

Even so, the fields in Anwar is at 16 Billion recoverable,.....I believe, not sure if you can quote me on that.

Re: Woot!!!111

Well, the US has a large army of highly technical vehicles that use a lot of fuel.
Also, we love our trucks.  Not those little go carts called "Cars."
We also have a large expanse of land that uses a lot of trucking.

So we need that oil.

Plus, we can afford it.  big_smile

I know what you mean by not believing professors, I take what they say with a grain of salt. However, I do believe this one professor's statement. I don't get what you are trying to prove with the "10% of US ..." statement, as the point you're making is a simple tweaking of some arithmetic. If those reserves could cover 1% of US Consumption, then it could last 200 years. That's not what I was trying to say. I was saying that if the US used only those reserves, and no imported oil, the country would tear through the reserves in two years. I was being purely theoretical. Now, of course, it's obvious the US will still import oil if/when the reserves are tapped, and therefore it will only make up a portion of the consumption, and the oil from those fields will last more than two years. I guess that's what you were trying to say, and it is true, but it does not refute the point I made in my first post.

Re: Woot!!!111

Why stay out of Alaska?  There is a "sizable" amount of oil there but yes drilling would do excessive damage to the environment there AND there are currently better places to drill with more oil that are not as environmentally sensitive.  Eventually, which pretty much means not now, when there is yet again less oil and hopefully better techonology drill in Anwar all you want, but why go there first.
Yell, I hope you're right but I'm waiting for the CNBC version big_smile

I'm going to be nicer promise

Re: Woot!!!111

Yeah I guess we'll know in a month when the USGS does its report. But I've heard scuttlebutt about expanded drilling for some months.

ahhh, ok, you agree w/me about Professors.  I dont even take it w/a grain of salt, but that is not important.  I dont believe this professors statement at all.  It was false, because I dont know a modern nation that uses only one source.
But...not important.

I dont get the point about 1% use of the field over 200 years either, thats not what I was trying to say.

I was tring to say that if the US used only 10% of their basic consumption, the Field would last 20 years at todays pumping ability of that field.   I was being purely theoretical, using your Professors assumption.

Yes, I believe it IS obvious that the US will use other sources of Oil consumption, that was the reason for my statement up using an inflated total of 10% vs. that field.

Im glad you were able to "Guess" thats what I meant, because that EXACTLY what I meant.  It means that your Professor, using Leftist Fuzzy Math, made an illogical, stupid, asinine assumption that would actually invade the mush minds of his mind numbed robot students.  These same students would quote his asinine assumption, and look what happens, when that statement is parroted.

Yes, your point is still valid.  Its absolutely and entirely illogical in it implementation, although it is true.

I would assume my statement is entirely off the mark as well, I would assume probably less than 10% total consumption would come from that field.  Its just that my point it entirely more logically correct in its feasibility.

Would you agree ?

Ohhh...by the way, run my post through a spell checker for me.....I dont have the time to do it.

Geez BW, is it any wonder you get forum bans when you verbally assault every other person who posts in the forum?

Stop being a knob.

This used to be the best signature ever, but after several years, a mod noticed it had a swear in it, and removed it.  I am happy to see they are paying attention.

Re: Woot!!!111

Black_Wing,

I'm happy that you finally understand what I was trying to say. By me saying the reserves would last two years, I was being purely theoretical (i.e. I understand that it will take more than 2 years to pump all of it, I meant that if it was all pumped and refined and that it was all that we [in the US] were using, it could only support our current consumption rates for two years). We had a misunderstanding, and now it's cleared up.

I generally don't like posting in forums. Usually if I do, it's because I believe I can add something significant to the conversation. The way you act in the responses to my queries is exactly the type of shit that makes me not want to post. I can't stand never-ending and increasingly childish confrontations keyboard to keyboard, as they never go anywhere. I can't see the thrill of trying to be an online trouble-starter or bully. I suppose it gets you off in someway; I guess I'll never know how it feels. If I wanted to start problems and bully people, I'd do it in real life, not on the internet. I can, however, understand why you prefer the internet version better. There's no chance of someone like me slapping the shit out of you in front of your friends to worry about when you get fired up and bark up the wrong tree. Grow up. Say what you want. I will no longer post any responses.

now, now, warsie, no need to be a boob.

Re: Woot!!!111

damn canadians!!!

reports are out they've been horizontally drilling from the border into those deposits in North Dakota......

now to get a war declaration on Canada so the price of wood will come down in the US.

Well obviously, anything along the border is bound to continue under our lands as well. Also, taking Canada would solve your oil problems for some time. The Albertan tar sands have more oil in them then the middle east thank you very much.
