Topic: Books on Power

Power is good. Having it means we get our way, have more resources and sexual options, and it means that we are above the mass of losers.

What are some good books on power?

So far I think

The Prince - Machiavelli
The Discourses - Machiavelli
The Art of War - Sun Tzu (Hehe they even have his works communicated in speech on you tube, with pictures!)
33 Strategies of War - Robert Greene
The 48 Laws of Power - Robert Greene

Edit:

Any other books?

Feel free to mention essential experiences you have had with acquiring and maintaining power.

Re: Books on Power

above the mass of losers in what way? there are millions of ways to distinguish yourself as above others, you should probably pick a more realistic and less destructive one then gaining power over people.

Re: Books on Power

But power is fun! Also, the Prince is just a good read.

Re: Books on Power

power is short lived; at most it lasts a lifetime.

Re: Books on Power

Avo,

It depends on what you do with it.

The American elite have power, lol. I don't think the majority of their members will be losing that power any time soon.

Khan,

Lol it's a fun read as well. It's also informative. The really funny part is the ending, when he talks about a redeemer of Italy lol.

Re: Books on Power

their members will loose their power at death, for certain. power over the material world can only last so long.

why do people that have everything most people strive for, attractive wife, money, family, ect; often find themselves depressed, even suicidal? if material gain was all that was important, would they not be happy?

Yes, when you die you die. Your point?

Well often times they are happy. But if you have not satisfied your social needs, which is sometimes the case, you won't be happy.

death is an event horizon, we dont know what happens after death, even though many of us like to beleive we do. but while certain parts of our past life may exist in whatever is after death, material wealth most certainly doesnt.

often times they are miserable. people dont like being complacent; they need to strive to improve themselves, you're striving to make yourself miserable.

Re: Books on Power

You can never be happy until you've achieved peace of mind, thus many people contemplate, attempt, follow though with suicide or fall to depression. avogadro from what i gather your saying you desire no power? If that is so your a liar, every man on this planet lusts for power it's a craving that burns deep in your soul. Or is it that you are powerless in your situation in which you stand right now, thus you envy those with the true power?

Knowledge is the greatest power one can have, as the mind ultimately achieves all things possible. I think you took Justinian's post out of context and misconstrued what he was trying to portray. Justinian simply pointed out the obvious that power infact is good, weither it be in the hands of a wise man or a complete idiot the man with the power holds the keys. Next he went onto simply point out a few books, that if you would read probaly contain knowledge, goes back to what i said about knowledge ... and you can't speak lowly of any book as yes it may be complete garbage, but reading it made u learn something, if nothing else how to spot garbage like this in the future thus saving yourself more time on your life.

Peace of mind is overrated because you can't reach it. Only thing that comes close is what I call a moment of bliss educed by your mind. With drugs or with love, whatever. Other then that I don't think it exists.

Re: Books on Power

The problem is that power is so easily defined to mean anything.

It could be military power: the simple ability to conquer, pillage, and kill.

It could be economic: the ability to manipulate, distribute, and withhold resources to force people to abide to your will.

It could be psychological: just creating the image of fear.  Example: ever hear the "shadow government" conspiracies?  If we assume, hypothetically, that it does exist, it would have gained tremendous power just through the rumor of its power, without anyone knowing what the hell it was.  Oh, and as an aside: wouldn't it be awesome if a shadow world government of caring, warm-hearted Buddhist monks emerged?  tongue

Mental: Picture this: A person imprisoned and locked in solitaire confinement.  That person spends the rest of his life meditating, creating their own language, or in some other way occupying himself during imprisonment.  The prison has lost its power, because it can't get into the guy's head.

Intellectual: Knowledge itself can be power just because of the fact that one has knowledge.

There's probably a billion other ways to obtain power.  At that point, there's no way to measure it, so it's a completely abstract concept.

I'm sorry you never reached peace of mind because i have and there's nothing like it smile. For me it begun with getting a direct connection with god, no i have no religon i adhere to one god solely and speak with him directly thus i need no church, pastor, or any other figure to connect us.

No way! A wife is an asset that depreciates in value.

It's a good book though.

Re: Books on Power

A wife is a tax write off, a housekeeper, free safe sex, a cook, a second person who seeks to further your goals and agenda's, who can provide a supplementary income, who's increased costs are offset by the increased income, a confidant, and a means to further your genes, if done right.

How can you say they depreciate?????
