Why can't metal just be metal for metal's sake knowing no lame undefined sub-genre's.

Obviously being a metal head I understand the difference between the different sub-genre's.
Also after 2 years of classical music study I know what makes the difference musically, especially being that most metal is classically based, but alot of difference is not in the musical structure but in the effects.
My point is its all semantics. Metal is metal and everyones definition of what the difference between Thrash/Speed/Power/Heavy/Goth/Black/Death  will be different.
Naturally as the first stars of metal start dying and the youth brought up on their music define their own version of what they heard as being that there isn't a finitely small number of guitar/bass/vox effects various combinations are going to create different sounds (which is all music is anyway) its how the melody corresponds and represents the bass and percussion that defines genre's not  whether the singer roars or clean sings or what kind of distortion is on the guitars.

Same with Electronic music on a sub-sub-genre level.
e.g 1-House/Lounge/Hard House/Garage House/Tech House
2-Trance/Hard Trance/Pop-Trance

Take trance, one dj put a slightly harder beat and less frills and someone was like 'man this is pretty hard-trance' and wham, everyone goes around saying hard-trance is some great new genre of music. ITS NOT, its just re-defined electronica.

As I Lay Dying... Good? i'm not so sure.. but you're entitled to your opinion even if they're crap I saw them at a festival alongside KillSwitch Engage, Bleeding Through, Still Remains, Divine Heresy, Shadows Fall in the metal section.
I have to say As I Lay were the low point.. All the rest were kickass.

....the mad thing i find about "pidgeon-holing" different genres is that when i attempt to describe a certain band or sound i can only resort to using death, black, power, etc....yet this seems to serve an injustice to all the different types within the metal "family" as describing queen as rock would suffice, but calling deicide rock would be a less than satisfactory response....but then again surely it is all rock....i am happy utilising the terms on a regular basis but to others my idea of black metal may be different to someone else....so what is the point of people asking "what type of music do they play then?"....my response used to last somewhere between 1 minute and 1 hour....now i just tell them to "go self replicate", give them the finger and walk away....surely a lot is in the name, for instance "dying fetus" will obviously mean it is heavier than your average commercial stuff you see on primetime music shows....for instance :

1, if the name sounds brutal....then it usually is
2, if it is from scandinavia....it will melt your face
3, if it is in a foreign language....it won't matter as you will spend the next week trying to "decipher" it or you may find yourself in a public place (such as childrens school, street, park, work, etc) singing (what you think) is an evil song and it turns out to be about searching for sex off prostitutes who you will torture....doesn't go down too well when you defend yourself at court either
4, if the name of the band, album and/or song contains the words "bitches, ho's, cashmoney or the likes" it will contain rap at some point so do not put onto your cd player if at a death metal party....doesn't go down to well when you defend yourself against thirty very angry people who want to decapitate you with a spoon and a cheese-grater
5, if the album cover does not have pretty flowers, puppys and similar....do not be suprised if it is heavy
6, if the cover does not have a reference to death, rape, torture, demons and so on....do not be suprised if young children run for cover in terror when you play it within earshot
7, never buy any album from your local dealers "luckydip" section....it will suck and you will feel defiled for days after and the only way to cure this sickness is to nail the dealers dog to his front door
