Re: Monopoly

"There are rules and institutions in the western world to prevent this, and they do work, but some compagnies seem to find a hole."

"How about some example companies, or some examples of what "holes" we're talking about?"

"holes were in? how about the national debt, where the lenders are sitting making unbelievable interest off their loans since we never reduce the principal. there's some fat cows feeding off the masses"

"Are you even in the right thread?  Read the entire thread to figure out the context of the word "hole.""

"zarf, perhaps not as related as first cousins, but i think it's relevant, considering its unhealthy and oligarchic nature. sure, they're not selling a market, but the national debt is 'cornered' in so far as it is stagnant, and the lenders are growing fat off tax dollars, and i wouldn't be surprised if the line the wallets of the powers that be to keep things that way."

Um... that still doesn't relate.  tongue

I copied and pasted the entire evolution of the conversation that led to your final statement, Elysian.  When I asked for an example of a "hole," I was asking about an example of a loophole that allowed monopolies to continue.

Forget about second cousins.  They don't even share the same genetic data of all lifeforms from the same planet!

Little Paul: "There are rules and institutions in the western world to prevent this, and they do work, but some compagnies seem to find a hole."

The "hole" is special favors of the political nature, campaign donations, legislation lobbying and the sort. It's called companies getting in bed with the government in return for granting them sole monopoly rights on their particular market. Microsoft is a poor example of a monopoly, because there are dozens, if not hundreds, of competitors in the same markets as Microsoft. Natural monopolies simply do not exist, and you can not prove that they ever have. In an unadulterated market economy, monopolies, if they existed at all, would suffer very brief life spans before the market is either littered with competitors or never realized to begin with. Monopolies exist because of the State's own monopoly on violence, not because of some extraordinary efficiency that, for whatever reason, someone else could not also obtain.

"Microsoft is a poor example of a monopoly, because there are dozens, if not hundreds, of competitors in the same markets as Microsoft."
Despite the fact its half-true, thats only theory. I say half true cause there are only a few big operating systems, especially for home users.

The reality is most computers are bought together with microsoft windows and often office. With windows comes Internet explorer, mediaplayer, lightweight text-editors, etc etc. The list goes on endlessly.

A lot of softwareproducts are made for windows only, because of their monopoly. Not only that, but also the hardware and their software is adjusted to windows instead of the other way around. Next to that you have compatibility problems and the fact most people still need to learn to work with microsoft products elswhere despite of what else they use at home.

Re: Monopoly

A monopoly has nothing to do with the number of competitors, but the percentage of the market that one firm controls. A firm that supplies 90% of the global market still has a monopoly, even if the other 10% include 1,000 firms.

Re: Monopoly

"In Economics, monopoly (also "Pure monopoly") exists when a specific individual or enterprise has sufficient control over a particular product or service to determine significantly the terms on which other individuals shall have access to it"

isnt that like the definition of governments? if you're against monopolies you're either an anarchist or a hypocrite.
