Topic: A guide: How to roleplay

To point out almost all roleplays in other forums have one guy that started the thing. And that guy is called the GameMaster(GM). He is the one that will dictace the direction of the story. But here we don't have those. The RP's are moderated by the people that play in it. And you will probably need to edit your posts on several occasions. Even a rollback by a few posts is not unheard of.

That being said there are some general rules that are never allowed within an RP.

Goddmodding: This is when suddenly out of your ass you conjure up an army of millions that will do your every bidding. Or how you know every tactic that the enemy employs and counter it perfectly. Never being defeated. Never dieying.

Yes diying. It might not seem to be aligned with how roleplays work. You create a character and you build a repor with them. They constantly evolve and become better and better. But at some point you will eventually enter into the ridiculous if you continue. Everyone has to die sometime. Granted with the lifespan of the rp's in this community this will probably never be necessary. But if you choose to kill your character it will certainly be a plot twist. Besides you can always enter with a new character, with new possibilities.

More to come later

Re: A guide: How to roleplay

The first thing that needs to be pointed out is that RP'ing here is different to standard RP'ing because none of the RP's here have a GM, which can cause problems, and lead to ridiculous situations (scinfari sea).

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: A guide: How to roleplay

Ahem, you've never participated in MS Wars I, Fokker.  We bombarded half the moon to kill off one guy who ended up being a clone for the the other side as the real guy showed up on the faction that killed the clone.  Then there's the one where we killed someone and they come back as cyborgs, or the unexplainable death escapes of Alexander Silent half a dozen times.  Oh, yeah, we probably killed half the army population 10x over in our massive battles, but who's counting?

The Scinfari Sea didn't get out of hand, in my opinion.  No one was willing to take the step to bring it back to Earth.

Re: A guide: How to roleplay

Alg, if we didn't overkill, we would never kill in that RP.  Besides, at that point, the "teams" weren't even so the player wanted to end that character with a bang and come up with a story as to why he showed up on the other side.  Pretty decent, imo.

Also, Roleplaying here isn't hard at all.  As long as you roleplay within the confines of the rules of that particular game, then you can't really go wrong.  The issue comes with overly complex stories because everyone has their own long-term plans before they start roleplaying nowadays and those plans often conflict with other players. Combine this with "structured" roleplays, where everyone posts 1-2 pages worth of a post, and you've got yourself something that is not only confusing, but complex, and unfriendly to read.

Re: A guide: How to roleplay

It's the fine thread between epic and godmodding.

Long-term plans are usually just a waste of time. Sometimes you can work to a plot you had decided from the start, but if you want to actually interact with the others, you'll find most of your plots fly out of the window. Whether it's your own roleplay or someone else's, just go with it and put your own plot aside for a bit, make it a subplot if you must. When you do that, I don't see how it can go wrong.

I'll never know if it was worth the pain, but I still loved it more than anything in the world - it was my life.

Re: A guide: How to roleplay

The way I have found it. Here and several other forums that there is one person that will guide the roleplay providing food for the others to consume and interact and change it slightly. And usually people will respect these changes. It also helps to communicate outside of the forum and in chats so you can discuss how you want to further your plot.

Then I lived.

Re: A guide: How to roleplay

My personal opinion is tacit knowledge, so any attempt to write it down would end up conveying the wrong message.

For the closest interpretation possible, I'd start off with Eltie's post, take note of Arocalex's comments, then look at why S:T3S has spawned three forks.

Wolves: He is reintroducing a new character into the main body

Algebra: Wanted more character development for his own guy

me: Needed epicness
