I want to know why he did not assume near absolute power in 1975 when he could have, and instead progressed his country toward a democracy with him as a constitutional monarch.

I want to know why he did not assume near absolute power in 1975 when he could have, and instead progressed his country toward a democracy with him as a constitutional monarch.
Because it was the right thing to do and gave him all the same levels of luxury he would have enjoyed without half the responsibility or stress?
Or a man who wanted to make his mark on history? Or, he figured it was going to happen anyways seeing as how his European neighbors were pretty much democracy-based and his people would love him for it?
