There's a point at which the number of nuclear missiles is pretty irrelevant, and Russia's probably there.


True, more missiles means that a US preemptive nuclear strike couldn't be preceded by the US bombing Russian nuclear silos to prevent retaliation.  However, the time it would take for a full-scale bombing of silos throughout Russia would give them more than enough time to launch a strike, considering both Russia and the US keep their nuclear weapons on hairtrigger alert.

The US can defend against about 20 missiles.  Russia has a few thousand, many of which are equipped with countermeasures, such as missiles that break apart into 50 or so pieces.  It's not like they need to spam that much.  tongue

I hope Russia does step up their military spending - Competition drives the markets, as such the U.S. will again enter into a military spending race, with russia, which will further the U.S. Military might, and contract out to U.S. Companies and boost the economy, when your the only big dog in the yard, you get fat and lazy, when there is 2 big dogs different story.

i approve. Russia needs to develope missles capable of breaking through anti-missle defenses, so that the US politically can develop anti-missile defenses that would defend against just about everyone else's nuclear missiles. is it actually the best thing for Russia? i doubt it.

The Russians are mostly using old soviet technology. Its shit. They know it, the Americans know it, we all know it. Sure, i wouldn't want 1,500 weapons coming at me -- but within the next decade the Russians will use this whole defense thing as an excuse to upgrade their weapons.

The Russians want more global influence. What better way to do it with nuclear-stocked next-generation ICBMs?

as for whether we would end the world; it depends on how you define it. i think we are capable of wiping out humans and a large number of other species, but i dont think we would destroy all life.....  and i dont think acouple nukes would be all it would take. we're talking about nearly every nuke made being used to wipe out the majority of the race, and then anarchy finishing the rest. a handful of nukes could cause cold enough climate to kill billions.
