Topic: A quarter of a century of Putin - how would you rule Russia?

Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.

1999: Prime Minister of Russia, taking over from drunk Yeltsin
2000-2004: First bout of presidency
2004-2008: Second bout of presidency
2008-2012; Prime minster, puppet master of Medvedev
2012-2024: Most likely another two 6-year runs as president, with the convenietly changed law

He'll be 72 by then, old, but not quite senile just yet. And quite some time to think up and execute some very comfortable long term plans. Most governments dont have the luxury to plan ahead more than 4 years. This  guy will paste another 15 years to already 10.

So, if you were in charge, what would you do?

Economically; Will oil keep its importance in the coming decade? Or will gas or other resources replace oil to keep that leverage they have on Europe? How will keep the post-yeltsin economical curve rising as spectacularly as it does?

Internally: How to go about on reestablishing russian influence sphere in former USSR republics without massive international -armed- protest (talk is cheap; Putin about Georgian prez: "I am going to hang Saakashvili by the balls" - all West did was send Sarkozy of all people to have a chat.)?

Foreign; rebuild -relative - dominance through economics, through military rebuilding, make use of a pacifist Obama-led USA, participate and dominate international organisations?

You're Putin. Your country is dragging itself out of the swamp. You got 15 years left. What do you do? smile

I would bomb Poland.And if US complains i would sink their ships in the mediteran.
I would also supply Iran with up to date  air defence systems.

Economically:
  Forge ahead with nuclear power, turning my country into a big fat battery upon which Europe, the Middle East and parts of Asia will become increasingly dependant.

Internally:
  Russian people need to overcome their [problem] with racism and anti-immigration attitude. Recently a right wing gang killed ~15 people and severely injured ~15 more in Moscow for being slightly darker than the average Russian. As long as such things continue Russia will fall; with the death rate rising and the birth rate falling Russia needs immigrants in order to live.

Foreign:
  The only change would be that, unlike with Putin, you'd know I was swearing. For example; If America started shouting about Iran possibly having nuclear weapons my response would be "So what? We have thousands, you have thousands, and between us they can't actually attack anyone without one of us turning into a mushroom-laying mother****er".
  And as for things like the former KGB agent dying of polonium poisoning; "Yeah, we killed him. We killed him because he breached his contract, he breached our confidentiality agreement, and he was a traitorous little shit... What? What did you think we were going to do, buy him a retirement watch and a 'sorry you're leaving' card?"

So... who thinks I should run the country?

I'd put the EU in a energy stranglehold and use the profits to modernise Russia, both socially, economically and especially the military.

And i'd have sex with niveau riche fake blonds from Moscow.

i'd rule russia with vodka in one hand and tolstoy in another, and then just bumble around aimlessly.  i'm sure there's many a leader that's ruled more ineffectively than that so i think it would go quite well.

If I were a prick, I'd upgrade and expand the trans-siberian, trans-manchurian railways and highways to increase shipping to and from Europe to and from China.  I'd dump cheap raw materials and financial investment into Chinese manufacturing in northern Chinese provinces, and export finished goods to EU states.  After EU economy is dependent on Chinese manufacturing via Russia, I'd keep raising tarrifs on goods exported to Europe, and keep prices lower Russia, creating a monetary surplus like China has done vis a vis the US, and eventually bankrupt the EU.  Then, I'd start buying eastern European countries back if not all of EU.

If I weren't a prick, I'd decentralize political power.
