Topic: brake job

I've got some... pretty serious issues with the brakes on my car.

It's beyond squeak.  When I break, it's a very loud "crunch" noise, which I assume means that it's not a simple issue of pads any more.  I've read a bit and can guess that my rotors are likely screwed as well but honestly, I have no idea what that means.

Do you guys have any suggestions in terms of what to watch out for when I'm looking to get a brake job done?  Any places I should avoid, or even a reasonable range to expect for this kind of auto work?

I'm a complete noob when it comes to cars, so any help would be much appreciated.

Re: brake job

by crunch, do u mean like grinding?

if so, you need to get them sorted ASAP.

mine started grinding after months of squeaking, i had no idea why.

friend of mine is a mechanic & he told me that it grinds when there are no pads left at all & you have metal rubbing against metal; i.e. the metal from the pads rubbing on the metal of the brake disks

all i needed were new break disks & new pads on each front wheel.

this was for a Vauxhall Corsa & cost me

Re: brake job

Dunno about over there but in USA they have Chilton guides at the library for models of cars with diagrams that explain the assembly of all the systems. You might want to read up on that.

Do not tell the garage you are a noob who knows nothing. They will rip you off.

Im suprised british mechanics would only do one wheel. US garages replace both sides as a matter of course. You pay for it of course.

this statement is so true !

look at a rough price guide for your car, just give them the facts; that you need 2 brake disks/pads & they cost around XXX, how much will they do it for.

also shop around, dont go to the first garage. go to them & say last garage says they will do it for (lets say)

Re: brake job

Pie yes you are past the pads phase. pads 20 dollars a piece so 40 dollars for both sides.

rotors are prob what you have under your pads. thats the metal your hearing. they will measure the rotors if they are thick enough they will turn the rotors no big deal.

If you go to a shop and rotors need to be replaced then your looking at up to 70 dollars per rotor.

shops don't always have the cheap rotors.Autozone type of place can get rotors for 20-30 dollars a piece.

If you continue to drive like this then your rotor can split very dangerous. Your brake caliphers will also wear out and your looking at 60-100 dollars per one of those.

I recommand break way 99 dollar all 4 tires if you need new rotors it will be more though.

Re: brake job

yeah do it today, in CA if the cops catch you driving on bad brakes you get a ticket and they can impound the car as not roadworthy

In Canada the cops will only catch you if you go to the donut shop, so you can easily evade them.
