to extrapolate my point to fit skoe's language. WFS stated its pointless because all culture's view of civilized is biased by their culture, and because its biased by their culture, its pointless. and my point was that culture is an integral part of everyone's life, our culture is what separates us from men that first inhabited the earth, it gives us the knowledge and equipment we use every second of our life; our culture is essential and our culture's influence is everywhere that we are; to say something is pointless because our culture is biased, is in fact saying all our lives, everything we've ever experienced or thought, is pointless.
I agree with avo.
We can thus view the world through our own lenses and apply notions of right and wrong, forming the basis of superiority and inferiority. No one else has to agree with our labels but I feel it's something we can do.

Not at all, it's pointless when you realise that ranking things that are not even rankable is silly. Culture has little to do with it, only selfrightiousness.
You can rank anything, thus everything is rankable.

Most American's are cocky.
Just a few days ago I read in the Dutch Telegraaf (newspaper) that the Netherlands aids the most to 3rd world countries.
Compared to the US, the Netherlands is a tiny tiny country. You would find US somewhere 5th on the ladder.
So don't look at us, if you think why we say you're selfcentred, hated.
But some of us westerners have had it too easy in the past generation or few. This [w00f!] of a once great culture has resulted in pansies without values who want to be taken care of. Virtue has been replaced by whining about having the "right" to have no rights save be taken care of by an all powerful force in the universe... we'll call it "government."
Some of us are old fashioned and want a return to the individualism and freedom that has motivated hard work and innovation, giving us the lead in the world medically, militarily, economically, standard-of-living...ly?
Others want to strive to achieve China's poverty standard of living because then at least it'd be fair. If they're too inept to take care of themselves and their families, you should be pulled down to share their failure.
Two schools of thought among these "westerners" who share the same nations pull in radically different directions. Right now our legislation is a mutt of what the two sides have managed to get passed, so each side blames failures on the other and claims credit for success. It looks like the pansies are increasing in number more quickly than us old fashioned kind of guys. History will tell this tale a few generations after we suffer it.

There are still cultures which place no inherent value on human life. We do. Anyone who claims we're no better than those who do not is an ignorant prick.
Okay, I found ONE group worse than the socialist pansies who threaten the wealth of western society (they're already hurting Europe badly enough!).
In regards to "giving" to third world countries, I'd like to squash this notion right away: (The road to hell is paved with things you think are braggable.)

im not sure what its like atm, but acouple years ago, the US civilians spent more per capita on charity then any other nation. also, maybe americans shy away from aiding 3rd world countries because most of the time some warlord hordes the aid and it does no good?
but you dutchies should be proud of aiding warlords that oppress impoverished people more then anyone else

the way i think of it, American's ancestry comes from all over the world, so Americans infact invented everything.
