except the US never attempted to be the supreme being of world control but attempted to stop communist expansion which it succeeded. the US was defensive and won the war, making the imposing enemy's economy collaspe because of the american resistance.

After the collapse, america did rule the world. They were the only reall power in the world. Noone could compete with them. Americans saw fit then to act as a police force around the world. Trying in their own mind to bring about democracy. But acts of terrorism and new rising powers are putting a stop to the thought of being almighty.

Their are limits to the power of the USA.

Not many people know this, but I own the first radio in Springfield. Not much on the air then, just Edison reciting the alphabet over and over. "A" he'd say; then "B." "C" would usually follow...

you act as though acts of terrorism significantly weakened the US, which they havent. and the only rising power is China and they are too intertwined into our economy for either of us to consider a war with the other.

the cold war made the US the superpower it is today. without the soviets there would never of been the funding to the military that there had been.

I don't think so. In a large nation with a liberal* and democratic background you need a good excuse or good propaganda to start imperialistic expensians. If there wouldn't have been an enemy it would have been very hard to achieve. It would have been hard as well to justify paying a large army with no real enemy.

*liberal: not the party but the literal meaning.

I'm scared to bring up WW2, mainly because it usually hijacks a thread but also because the situation was completely different but never the less the US did not opt for satelite states but real indipendant nations in europe.
