lol we're in a very unifying mood today, aren't we?
I dont think it will happen, unless our Prime Minister K.Rudd keeps pushing for us to become a republic and it happens. And the ole' Helan (NZ PM) wants to jump on board ![]()
There are both great curtural histories behind both countries, and it becoming 1 country may undo some of it? Im not sure, but it could happen? We both have rivalries against each other, in sport and out
And people are contantly traveling between the countries, and both depend on each other for growth.
Im not making sense
Skoe: I am against.... an economic union might be workable, would need to see details.
Sky: I think Aussie is more likely to go republic than NZ, I don't think even Helen Clark wants that at moment, and it hardly ever comes up at elections...
I thought they were a republic
> Small? They have more territory and pop than NZ.Did they stop eating each other?
I didn't mean size or pop, i actually meant as a developed nation with a sphere of influence. Papua New Guinea is neither developed or self-supporting. But to be honest, i hadn't realized how big Papua New Guinea really is
(Either that or how small New Zealand is
).
> Skoe: I am against.... an economic union might be workable, would need to see details.
But not a military union? I guess we don't need it, since we are both (AU, NZ) in ANZUS anyway. A union would just drag Australia and New Zealand against Indonesia in the event of a conflict.
Also i am thinking a bit splitting factor is nuclear energy and weapons, and the fact that Australia has an abundance of Uranium
.
Benefits would be cheap travel and trade, same currency (I expect.. essentially we would be the 8th State/Territory correct?), we wouldn't Have to worry about things affecting us (NZ) on a solo country but be under the wing of Democratic Australian Government thus viable for all the rights of Tassie. Helen Clark/John Keys would just be another Premiere to Mr. Rudd.
Thats what I guess anyway.. im against it (being a kiwi), but in Unifying The World. ![]()
Your also against a regional union?
Also what do you think of dropping ANZUS and making a new treaty just between Australia and New Zealand...?
I didn't realise ANZUS was valid? Did they sign a new one, one where the US started liking us dispite the no-nukes thing? As far as I am aware there is no miltary alliance between NZ and US, though their may be one between NZ and Aust.
Miltarily, NZ and Aussie will always come to each others defense, so basically there is a treaty in place even if there wasn't a formal signed one. Economically, as I said I would need to see details, but I doubt it would either be good enough for NZ, or give up enough from Aust. Aust is just oo much bigger geographically and population wise for it to really work in any meaningful way, or at least in a more co-operative way than it already is... Politically would just be stupid... We have vastly different view points on foriegn affairs, on how to deal with internal issues, on just about everything...
The one thing it would do is create a cricket and rugby superpower that would dominate both games for ever and a day...
ANZUS is technically still valid i think...
I don't think it is because the US refuses to do miltary manuvoures with us because we have a law which says if they want to sail into our seas they have to declare if the ship carries nuclear weapons given our anti-nuke laws(though they wouldn't actually stop the ship coming to our ports) however the US refuses to say which ships have nukes and which ones don't...

The NeoBritish Empire, greater Australia, the Rimworld Alliance?
The Purple Faced Monkey Dipping Alliance of Doom.
Also acceptable....
Skoe, if you look at unifying PNG, you'll probably get another Tibet style independance movement.
China has poured money into supporting Tibet (And Taiwan), with very little gain. They want to be acknowledged over it, which is one reason why China doesn't like the independance movement. Also like the Soviet Union with it broke up, the Soviets were pouring money into other countries without getting any benefit from it. They would tell the people what to do (Work wise), but because it was some nob up in Moscow, the factory worker really didn't care, 'cause they would get paid any which way. So they forgot how to work. When the Union broke up, and they said 'Here's your opportunity, go by yourself or you can stay and do it our way', the economy of some countries just went downhill cause a) they cant do something better than another country or b) they cant do it cheaper. So, ****, what can we do?
Plus looking at the way we treat our Kooris, I'm not sure PNG would want to be part of Australasia.
As for the NZ unification, we are the most overgoverned country in the world. The states will merge before we unify with the Kiwis.
You Fool makes the only good point. Couple of our teams already play in the same league. Netball, Soccer, Rugby? Lol, none of those sports count. Victoria rules Aussie Rules!
I'm sure there'll be a MoU, like the defence (Though thats because if one of us drops, the other will be next), on stuff like trade, travel (Only need drivers licence not passport), but it really is a long way to make a difference to most businesses.
"Victoria rules Aussie Rules!"
You mean statistically the other states have a chance? lol
Go the Magpies!!
Feral Magpies supporter! Look at that metro Thomas... Though he did play very well in the International rules... I'd have him on my team... Then again, did I actually have a team to go for this year? Reckon my old U/18s team could have gone better than my not so mighty Dees... But good news is they're moving their training ground to ten minutes away from my place! Yay!
I think there should be a union between the two, but it should occur under a renamed federation with the north and south islands of NZ being admitted as separate states to give more balance to NZ in the united senate. I know this wouldn't be popular in NZ because is would be seen as breaking up the country, but it is a fairer way to assign legislatively power to NZ
At the very least, there should be a currency union to remove those final small barriers of trade and properly reflect the interconnectivity of the economies.
I am even against a collective currency. The small trade barriers in place are probably more helpful to Aust than NZ, but they do allow us in NZ to continue to have a little independance from our big brother next door ![]()
One thing to note is that NZ has been mostly safe from the economic turmoil from overseas mostly because of our moderate isolation. Our companies don't have major shares in offshore companies, and offshore companies (other than Aust) don't have major shares in our companies, so when the shit hit the fan we dropped, but we didn't collapse... though that could also be that all our shaky financial insitutions had already gone south...
Plus we don't wont to destroy NZ's standing in the World. No one likes them, but at least no one hates them. Us Skips are hated by a couple of peoples...
Had a laugh during the Olympics that the Pommy newspapers were bragging that they beat Australia in the medal tally.
Last I heard, the New Zealand economy was in recession and was doing a lot worse than the Australian economy.
its in recession but thats nothing to do with the global melt down... We are also not doing badly... Major job losses are with factories moving to SE asia and china, but thats nothing new... finiancial companies going bust, but mostly ones that were resoanbly shaky and invested too much in the housing bubble which was always going to burst...
I had thought the aussie stocks were falling as much as us, or at least proportionatly...
