Amsterdam isn't an uber huge city - at least, it didn't seem that way to me when I was there. tongue  I stayed in a place a reasonably large distance away from the centre but walked in every day - the walk was good and rather pleasant and not that long. 

As Primo says though, Amsterdam has a truly marvelous public transportation system that is uber efficient and cheap too, so even if you live some distance away from the centre, you won't have any difficulty finding transport to the heart of Amsterdam.
