Topic: American Empire

What do you people think? Does the US fit the description of an empire?

Re: American Empire

didn't you already post a thread like this a while back???  whatever.  I don't think that The United States fits the description of an empire mostly because an empire rules with absolute power which is completely contrary to the constitution which is what this country is built on.

if The United States government can be challenged, which happens a lot, then it is not an empire.

Re: American Empire

And you don't have the most elusive characteristic of an empire; which is a kickass infantry formation like the phalanx, tortuga or even british carr

Those aren't formations, those are types of units tongue

Re: American Empire

And i did say "kickass infantry formation".

The marine infantry are good, but they wildly storm beaches and duck for cover and all, they don't have that typical "undisputed owner of the field" formation..

Re: American Empire

Haha, yes the U.S. can fit the MODERN descriptions of an Empire.

The U.S. is the sole remaining Super Power with influence that stretch the world wide.

The last time that was the case it was the British empire, in a world where people chose there words carefully, the American Empire is more like "Obey us or we will sanction you, if that doesn't work we will invade" tongue

Anyways for the Unique unit.

The U.S. Marine is feared by many nations.

phalanx, Tortuga or even British Carr <-- Those are just men with equipment standing in a specific way that in turn makes them a "unit".

The best thing i can say for the US on that front is The Marines, which are an improved model of the Royal Marine, and

THE UMAV - Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are the forefront of Warfare, and the U.S. is at the helm.

Marines are just men with equipment, not even standing in a specific way, too?

Huh? Fire team formations are very tactical, there are a large amounts of different formations.

Echelon, Wedge, Offset to name a few.

We spend countless hours doing Drill which is meant to exercise small unit cohesion and movement tactics, we all move as one unit.

It's a tactic adopted from the Spartans, many of modern day unit tactics are.

Re: American Empire

Imperial.....easy now.

A US Army ACR is quite a force.

At 29 palms, we schooled a Recon force w/our bradley units.

A Marine Brigade of the 1st Div came to the Army NTC in Ft. Irwin.
Needless to say, your marines had their asses handed to them.....but ......
Sempre Fi, none the less from an old Mech Infantryman.

ACR is a formation.
Carrier battle group is a formation.
F-22 wing IS a formation.
etc.

Thank you for providing the exact comment I'd have on your remark regarding the phalanx, tortuga and carr

Re: American Empire

@ Zoz, if i go with your logic then NO empire was an Empire, the Romans, the British, the Greeks (After Macedonian unification, and just about every major empire has adopted tactics from the Spartans, they were a unique pioneer in warfare.

@ Black_Wing

No doubt the U.S. Marine is a basic rifleman, but he has a world-renown reputation, which is what i was trying to point out a "Marine" is an infantry type, a "U.S. Marine", is a different cat of a game altogether.

There are plenty of units, and formations that are superior the to basic U.S. Marine.

For instance a U.S. Marine Recon Ranger <= Wicked sick bloodthirsty freak.
U.S. Scout Sniper <---- Some of the best Snipers EVER, Ex. GySgt. Hathcock - 91 Confirmed Kills, Vietnam, more then ever recorded. - Some event of the movie Enemy at the Gates were in fact based off him, and the novel "Sniper", as were the movies "Sniper" Series.

Rangers

Green Berets

The problem is your asking for a solution to a square problem in a world of circle, formations, while still present don't signfly a nations imperialistic might, as lets say a specific piece of equipment, or tech.

I agree with what he said.  The United States is the last great Super Power.  It is the leader of the world.  Everything that happens in the United States affects the world dramatically. It's economy, cultural trends, technology, and even famous persons.  everything the US does it leads the way for the rest of the world

Maybe you shouldn't speak about things you don't know about.

I spent 4 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and just recently discharged Honorably, and i'm an Iraq Vet.
