Topic: Seagate vs Western Digital

Okay, who is more reliable when it comes to hard drives?  I want to get their 7200 RPM, 3.0 Gb/s 250/320 GB  HDDs, but I can't seem to choose which one.  They need to last longer than 1.5 years, too.  Preferably, I would like them to last 2.5 years (I really, really hate re-installing OSs).

Also, when it comes to AM2+/AM2 motherboards, which of the manufacturers should I get:  MSI, Gigabyte, or ASUS?  I'm looking at the 790FX so that I have the ability to enable the entirety of the spider platform (should I choose to do so).

I have always heard Western Digital is the better of the two

I have WD, and they're very great. Never worked with Seagate though (well, I have, but those were harddisks of 15 years ago). They should last 2.5 years easily, although reinstalling will depend on your stuffed registry and the amount of crap (spyware etc) you manage to gather in that time. What you defenatly shouldn't get is Maxtor.

And for your motherboard, I think you should look at the things that are on it, rather then the brand wink

Re: Seagate vs Western Digital

I have a seagate
the instalation process was hell, did as it said in the manual, which pretty much crashed my entire pc, had to boot linux from cd, and  reset everything in order to get it right again

however, now that it's installed, it works perfectly, no complaints

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.
Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.

Re: Seagate vs Western Digital

Yeah, I won't be getting a Maxtor HDD (I have an external, which works fine, though).  I may just go with Seagate, because it's $10 cheaper and (from what I've heard), they have a better warranty as well as less of a DOA rate.  Thanks for the input guys.  Now to buy the parts to my new machine...
