This was handled incorrectly by certain parts. 1457 could have won this one, if they had wanted to call in some favours.
There had been a lot of rumbling in the corners about 1441 for a while, and if 1457 had wanted to, they could have assembled 4 or 5 different families against 1441 for this one.
With 1457 backing down, other families were forced to NAP 1441 as well, as one of their more powerful supports (1457) were out of the game. Thus, 1441 grows, while more than one family suffers.
This was an example of how the lack of tactics, strategy and a cool head can ruin a potentially good fight ;-)
