Stone's "W." actually ran fourth, opening with $10.6 million to finish behind the family comedy "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" (No. 2 with $11.2 million) and the chick flick "The Secret Life of Bees" (No. 3 with $11.1 million).
"For me, an Oliver Stone film about George Bush doesn't necessarily scream big box office," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. "A film like this is very tough to gauge, but this is exactly what I thought it would do."Lionsgate's "W.," starring Josh Brolin as Bush, came in well behind the $18.7 million debut of Stone's last movie, 2006's Sept. 11 saga "World Trade Center." That movie opened in nearly 3,000 theaters, about 900 more than "W.," however.
Playing in 2,030 cinemas, "W." averaged a solid but unremarkable $5,197 a theater, compared with a $6,334 average for "World Trade Center." "W." was shot on a modest budget of $25 million.
The film had been on political junkies' radar since Stone put "W." on the fast track less than a year ago so he could have it out before the November election. Stone started shooting in May, his five-month turnaround time remarkably short by Hollywood standards, where major movies can take a year or more.

Budget of 25 Mil. 
I would have to say, they dumped at least the same in marketing,....about 20+ Mil to Market.

They fealt it was important to put it out before the election.

Im sure the movie will do much better in Europe.

Yeah I hear it won't recoup.

Despite 20 years of nagging by "artists", Americans still feel a well-made lighthearted movie is a better movie than something dark and depressing.

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.
Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.

I guess it's pretty good news to see that people actually judged the thing as uninteresting, in part following the "media elite" reviews (56 on Metacritic).

The film, though, is already 18 millions up total and cost 25, so I guess it will recoup only in theaters and the US, not taking into account foreign gross and DVD.

Sadly, just like Moore's crap, a big name and good money/marcom allow bad movies to be successfull hence to continue this kind of "successes". After all, that's how the US exports so many crappy movies - saying this without judgment or bad generalising, the US also release the biggest percentage of good movies, but crappy US movies fill remaining spots. It's just how it works.

On your other thread ("Bill Maher Movie.....a FLOP....."), it did get 10.5 millions so far with a budget of 2.5, while the last one ("American Carol") got 6.9 millions with a budget of 20, so these threads would do with a little update, sad or not depending on each one's views.

what is so bad about that movie anyway? its making fun of bush and he wasnt exactly the greatest president in the world. We have seen much worse making fun of bush on tv. i mean have you guys watched lil bush?

the thing that it flopped doesnt really mean anything to me. i am not like you in saying that it flopped because its making fun of bush. i am saying it flopped because not enough people are interested in it like me.
