Topic: Republicans/Democrats: A balance of power

Ok, I think that no one party in the US is saintly or more intelligent than the other, and in fact they are all full of it. But I think that a way to reduce the costly effects of ideology from both the parties is for there to be a balance of power between them, meaning that no party has majority control over the executive and both houses. With a balance of power, the parties are required to compromise and develop more pragmatic solutions.

I am worried that the Democrats may accumulate such power, and instead of Bush ideology we'll get the equally destructive Democrat ideology.

um we've had that balance of not getting crap done for ten years now, adn we're all sick of it

18th century: compromise by kicking decisions down the road eg slavery and the peace treaty for the war of 1812

19th century: compromise by setting up a bureaucracy that would make decisions independently, Congress won't have to regulate food or reservations, teh Indian Affairs Bureau and FDA would get stuck with the nitty gritty details

20th century: compromise by borrowing money...eg oh every damn budget since 1932 I think

21st century: compromise by making a treaty that requires us to do what some foriegners decide later  WTO, etc

compromise and negotiation is destroying the USA!!!!

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.

This would be ideal. In reality, the party backing legislation just bribes enough people of the other party with billions of dollars in "earmarks."

You are correct. That's why I hate hearing all this talk about bipartisanship. I LIKE it when they're gridlocked. It means they can't mess things up more, which is what they do best. It was designed this way for a reason.

The system requires a real public sentiment to unlock Congress and get big things done. Unfortunately, our two party system has left us with "socialist" and "more socialist" candidates for the white house this year. So regardless of what people want, this is the change coming.

why does everyone keep saying socialist? how about fascist?  i mean after all, our candidates are in love with corporations, corporations are in love with fascist dictatorships, match made in heaven.

because people stop listening and just assume you're some extremist when you call the US something that radical. better off being more accurate and calling it an oligarchy because most people dont even know what one is so they wont dismiss you right away for claiming the US is one.

i cant always critique myself. well, maybe i could; but it would get boring.

now that i think about it, correct isnt the right word either. correcting isnt that hard either, look at people who thought Bush would be a good president smile whats tough is making people admit fault.

also, are people actually swayed by televangelists? i always considered the ones on TV as stand up comedians.
