Topic: Bear Stearns

Shares closed Friday at ~$30

JPM to acquire them at $2 a share and they expect the shareholders to accept that deal.

Looks like Bear is the first on the list of financials to get murdered.

In the distant future when they are charting the "greater depression of 2008 - 2012" they will mark this weekend as the start of the rout.

umm GREAT big_smile

They're trying to avoid a recession and I think they'll only make things worse, the govt can't throw money at overseas markets

Re: Bear Stearns

They should just let the recession happen already. I think a recession is what it will take to push China and Japan to cut their losses and stop supporting the U.S dollar and treasury debt and U.S consumption by depressing their own currencies.

It will hurt at first but the rest of the world will boom like it never has within two years. Money (trillions so far if you believe it) which was diverted to prop up the U.S can be invested into infrastructure, actually performing investments...etc

Re: Bear Stearns

The fall of a mighty gambling house.  Bear Sterns had over 35% of their assets tied into high dividend mortgage back securities.  They made a Killing in the mid 2000's.  But, got slammed when the rug was pulled on the Real Estate Market runnup.

This is the Market correcting itself.  And I think its just fine.  As long as the Govt. doesnt get too deeply involved.

Giving checks out to people was bad enough.

Selling a series of short-term notes to buy out a % of bad notes, mostly held or sold by Freddie and Fannie.  These were Govt. backed anyway.

I have no problem w/any of this.

I have moved most of my securities into cash.  The rest I have moved into utilities, a gold mining company, solid conglomerates like GE and P&G, I held my Wal-Mart, and held My Global Nuclear play.  Really, any solid large company is global.

Re: Bear Stearns

WalMart and Home Depot would be poor investments as well.

Better off with Exxon, need oil to eat don't need anything from home depot, nobody is buying houses.
Soon the crap Walmart sell will be "no priority" as well.

Re: Bear Stearns

ROFL.  .... Pesos

I dont play the markets.  My dollars are just fine.  Im not going over the border anytime soon.

In cash means, not in securities......as in Im mostly out of securities and into cash.

WalMart is a good play this coming 6 mos.  As is CostCo.    I like the old stand byes.  Solid diversivied Conglomerates, Utilities maybe a mine or two.  I dont like oil, I like Nuclear.

I didnt mention Home Depot.

Tell you what.  Will toss you all a bone.

SGR.  Shaw group.  Check out that stock.  Ive had it for approx 2 years now.  Great play, and I cant find a reason to sell it.  Thats my Nuclear play.   Its also the reason I like GE, Nuclear.

Load up on Nukes.  Thats the future.

WAL MART STORES
(NYSE: WMT)

Last Trade:    49.95
Trade Time:    4:01PM ET

We'll see where it is in 6 months.

if it's at $40 it will be doing great

Re: Bear Stearns

Why would you go with a massive importer like Walmart? Companies that are more focussed on exporting products/produce would perform better more likely. Oh wait there aren't that many of those in the U.S anymore.

Gold and utilities hard to argue with though.

For once BW, me and you completely agree on a point. The bank made bad investments, they should be left to suffer the consequences. It's a murder of taxpayer money to throw $30B at a big bank like this.

Re: Bear Stearns

Because WalMart is a market leader, and exgtremely diversivied.
It has solid financials.
It is trading up for the year.

TheStreet: Buy
Ford Equity Research: Hold
Market Edge: Buy
Jaywalk Concensus: Buy

Hey what can I say.
I own a  lot of Wal-Mart.

2% dividend as well, and good forcasts.

@ Tavius

This is a grown up conversation.  Leave, and take your childish remarks with you.

@ ESA

RTA, Thanks.  I just researched it.

Very good pick as well.
Diversified, picked up a big Contract for F15C radar fits.
Another solid company w/a good dividend.

In what way were Tavius' remarks childish?

Your signature is way more childish than any of Tav's comments.

Re: Bear Stearns

Han: "Hope its not American  Cash"

I doubt what BW meant is having a big stockpile of cash somewhere in his backyard (if that were the case, he'd be better off with stockpiling physical reserves of gold). Cash investments are things such as Certificate of Deposits and Money Market accounts, which offer premium interest rates over a typical savings account and more strings attached. Why he is throwing more money on this end, I don't know. Bernanke is holding the interest rate artificially low, which is technically good, but very misleading, for borrowers; but for savers, people with most of their money in interest-bearing accounts, the future appears rather bleak. Actually, the savings rate in the US is going to shit, and it's a very real problem that the US will have to cope with as the recession trickles into every crack and crevice thanks to all this "free money" the Fed was handing out a few years ago.

Re: Bear Stearns

Apparently I insulted his precious Walmart... BW listed gold mining as a possible sector to invest in so I assumed that he was betting on the possibility of a further decline of the U.S $ and higher inflation hence the Walmart comment.

Re: Bear Stearns

@ Vamp

Are you the new forum thought police ?

Its your turn to babysit Tav today ??

Grow up... baby.  waaaa

@ Acolyte....
You started off good, then slipped out into the rain, and just about in the sewer.

Handing out money is going on now, to inject liquidity.

Handing out money earlier ??

"Savings Rate" is an antiquidated measure of a banks health.  The Fed has 900 Billion under their control. w/o going to congress.
Savings rates are no longer a measure of a banks lending ability, as it was in the 1920's.

Tav:

No.  My remark was your child like anti-American injection of bullshit into a grown up conversation.
Obviously you have little knowledge of such things as being discussed.  But you fealt a need to put in something.......

I just pointed out the obvious.

Re: Bear Stearns

"Money handed out" is not literally handing out money.

Its injecting liquidity through lowering rates, and the fed backing notes.
It builds available money, and confidence.

Re: Bear Stearns

I'm not referencing this: "Handing out money is going on now, to inject liquidity."
but this: "Handing out money earlier ??"

You're disputing the fact that there hasn't been "money handed out" earlier, yes or no?

Re: Bear Stearns

Again, the injection of liquitiy and the lowering of rates.

The later handing out money was referring to the "rebate" checks, although there are checks going to those that dont pay income taxes.
