Topic: Eh, a total gripe an whine, which will change nothing. :)

Why are companies allowed to put "distributed by" on products? Why not  "made by" required?

In the USA, if you go to Walmart, or Dollar General, or Save-A-Lot, you can buy inhouse products which list the products as distributed by, an not made by. Those products are fine, and good quality, BUT, I want to know where they were made, and by whom. Is it imported? Or made in country? All those things impact on my choices.

If, I knew who made em. an where, I could decide to buy or not, based on the country, state/province, and company (and company rep).

By using "distributed by" I feel companies are allowed to limit my choices. (those choices based on who an where the product comes from)

I think there are like 7 major  canneries in the USA, (and like 400 brands for vegetables) I think what they do, is just switch the labels, midrun, so, it's the same food, just different labels, an, diff prices.

you broke the code!

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.
Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.

Re: Eh, a total gripe an whine, which will change nothing. :)

Eh, surely, these places do not all have their own canneries or chip factories (crisps) or what ever?  (butcher shoppe, etc?) Why are they allowed to say distributed by, and not made by?

Dont we all, as consumers have a right to know where, and by whom, the products were made?

Re: Eh, a total gripe an whine, which will change nothing. :)

No.

It's good that we are ignorant of those things. Personally it wouldn't matter for me, but it would decrease consumption and raise prices if the emo people found out.

As long as the emo people are silenced and ignorant of where things come from, the world is a better place.

@  [TI] ZoZferatu [Pw9] : Eh, no, I am a Yank.  (I full realiize I type like a brit/can/aussie. But, that is exposure an emulation. Mosta my rounds have been with brits/cans/and aussies. My VERY best friend in this game is in BC Canada. An, I have dear friends in Aussie.)

@ Justinian: Gawd. You dont want to know where it was made and by whom? Do you just use whatever is handed you? Do you eat just anything? Eh, I got some nice tasty dirt, lol.

If I am to eat grubs from Australia, I surely want to know the Abos picked and roasted em, and not some prick from Poland out to make a buck. Suppose the Polish prick decided to use grubs from the black forrest, an, pass em off as grubs from AussieLand? Suppose, insteada the usual wood fire, the other guy used natural gas? Wood is renewable, NG is not. an eco choice. (Eh, an, no offense to Poland. Was just the country far from Aus, that I thot of.) An, with "distributed by" how do ya know?

" Personally it wouldn't matter for me, but it would decrease consumption and raise prices if the emo people found out."

This part, I dont understand. You musta had a diff econ course than I. The way I learned: limited production, and high demand, means high prices. High production and limited demand means low prices.

Last I knew, prices were set by demand  vs supply (in a free market)

"It's good that we are ignorant of those things" In some ways I agree. If you saw sausage made, you might swear it off. If you saw a cow killed, and dressed out and cut up into regular portions, you might swear off beef. If you visited a slaughterhouse for chickens, you might swear it off too.

But, eh, ignorance is bliss?, lol. Ignorance of what goes on and where, an how, just means you are a sucker, and ducking responsibility.

You KNOW that steak on your plate came from a cow. You know it died, and was butchered. You KNOW someone had to remove the entrails an peel the hide, an cut it up.

Walkin into that nice clean supermarket or butcher  shop, you just see the fresh meat, displayed, ready to cook. You can refuse to see what went before, and use the end product. But that is stupid, an closin a blind eye.

Hummy,

Errr, I am referring to new age wackos who are motivated by misguided moral ideals, who target their hatred towards Nike and most meat companies. We should be ignorant of the origins of our products to limit their ability to lower the demand for food and other items. These moral activists should moreover be ruthlessly suppressed. Moral activism is bad for the economy!

As for potential dangers in our food, I'm not worried about that. We have sufficient regulations to safeguard against them.

Please could you not associate me - as a Brit - with the language and spelling of yours posts. >=|  I'm no English language saint, but it is quite obvious you're American and not Australian, Canadian or British.  tongue

To those who understand I extend my hand; To the doubtful I demand to take me as I am.

Re: Eh, a total gripe an whine, which will change nothing. :)

@ Lateralis:   Indeed, You are quite right.  I apologize for slandering the natives of those other countries, and for my improper usage of your rather glorious language.

I am able, of course, to type perfectly correct (American) English. I do have my baccalaureate  from a rather prestigious college, here in the states. Also, please note the vast majority of my less than proper spellings and word choices are an affectation. They are mostly consistent. although with any pretense, it is sometimes difficult to preserve.

However, those weak explanations (excuses) made, I do once again, apologize for my statement. It was truly wrong of me to make a statement that might be taken so as to place me on par with a true native speaker of the real English. I realize full well my level of expertness is dwarfed by yours.

I honestly hope and trust you can forgive my cheek.

I do see your point about wackos like PETA. I also see your reasons for being against the far left moralists.

Vegaterianism strikes me as truly odd. One need only examine their own teeth in the mirror to see we are omnivores. I see a middle course as best, and am just as well appalled by those who espouse being carnivores. But each of these choices are in fact choices. And, I truly feel everyone should be allowed to make such choices.

I feel informed choice is the only way to go. Everyone throughout all societies should have access to any and all information they want/need to make an informed decision on whatever topic.

With-holding information may help suppress the far left and far right on any issue, but it also suppresses the mainstream folks as well.

AND, "sufficient safeguards" dont exist. Get informed. Do you know a USDA inspector visits eack packing plant (slaughterhouse) on the average of once in seven years? We dont have enough inspectors to do so more often, let alone monitor daily. Remember the recent outbreaks of E. Coli infections, and the bit about Mad Cow disease? (if not, go Google it up). The FDA is in bed with the drug industry. The AMA, ADA and Bar associations exist to protect their members, not police them.

I know this all makes me sound like one of the nutcases I am against. BUT, go see for yourself. You can stick your head in the sand, or go get informed. Again, a choice, and yours alone to make. You can run the internet and ck it out.

Re: Eh, a total gripe an whine, which will change nothing. :)

Just a quick note to this rather strange thread, but your original complaint was about food / item packaging having "distributed by" written on and not "made by" but if you are so consious about these things then you could try contacting the distributor who should hold all the infomation to where its made ect......  However, look at Sheffield in sunny old England, during WW2 they were famous for making some of the best steel in the world smile soooooo a small town in Japan changed its name to Sheffield just so they could write "made in sheffield" on there steel, genious move.... So even if you do have a "made by" mark on a product it doesnt mean its been made well or by who you think.
