Topic: Iraq ... Oct 2008

The New York Times, holding true to form, Democrat Party Rag Paper, and vested in violence in IRAQ....continues to put out articles like this.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/02/world/middleeast/02iraq.html?em

I really find this quote.....absurd, but of course a NYTimes "reporter" and "Editor" find it worthy:

Come .......joust w/the master.

Re: Iraq ... Oct 2008

Can't see anything on the NYT that isn't true.

Re: Iraq ... Oct 2008

Right.

Please point us where the NYT article says that civilian deaths or US casualties are up, or where it says violence is on the rise?

Everybody remotely interested in what is happening down there knows that this is not the case, even the hardcore liberals.

And by the way, you won that war a long time ago, remember? Get over it.

The question is what comes next. Now that the surges worked (they did) and that the police is done by ex-gunmen on the payroll, you can see the first question rise again, the one that should have been adressed from day 1: how do you prevent this to be a future bloodbath?

It seems to me that this is what the article is about.

Re: Iraq ... Oct 2008

Golk.

NY TIMES report....by a reporter.
If I wanted an EDITORIAL.....I would go to the Editorial pages.

Question:
You believe this to be reporting, by a journalist ?

I won the war ??   You mean the Coalition of the willing.....a group of countries "Won the war."   I agree.
Get over what ??   What is "It" ??

What comes next ??
ROFL.......  Maybe I can find some OPINIONS in the EDITORIAL PAGES ??

You want my opinion ??  What happens next ??

You have elections, and more democracy in action.
People put down their guns when they feel they are not threatened physically, and people start talking, like human beings....and not shooting like lawless animals.

After all, I believe they are people.

Not like you all on the left.....who think they are all lawless animals......that cant possibly live in peace.

Re: Iraq ... Oct 2008

Belgium has serious ethnic divisions!

That could mean nothing but it could prove lethal.

In 1945 Belgians shot each other in the streets, factions of Belgians claimed to be "Resistance" and other Belgians joined the Schutzstaffel.  In 1954, Belgians overthrew King Albert III.

Belgium could remain a sound investment and stable country, or it could EXPLODE!!!

Re: Iraq ... Oct 2008

BW so I think we fundamentally disagree here. smile

Trying to figure the ethnic and religious issues on the current middle east "balkans" is the way to report about Iraq, not discussing a victory that has been achieved (the "it"), and could have helped if brought up before, if only to allow people to "warn about it before it happened" (as is currently favored in the run for the white house).

Yell has an uncanny way of being sarcastic and funny, I just hope everybody understands why that specific comparison is hilarious.

Lol. The Belgians are funny

Re: Iraq ... Oct 2008

"Belgium has serious ethnic divisions!"

Debatable, there are different languages spoken, but wether they're ethnic divisions is a rather unclear matter.

"That could mean nothing but it could prove lethal."

The body that's now Belgium consists out of entities that go back to at least 1477.

"In 1945 Belgians shot each other in the streets, factions of Belgians claimed to be "Resistance" and other Belgians joined the Schutzstaffel.  In 1954, Belgians overthrew King Albert III."

We overthrew a king that's yet to be born? yikes
Leopold III was an incompetent monarch who tried both getting himself into a stronger ruling role under Hitler's wings, wich made him a prisoner of Germany. However, he was treated with quite a lot of respect of the Germans, leaving him in a rather luxurious 'prison', while others suffered.

"Lol. The Belgians are funny"

I agree.

Re: Iraq ... Oct 2008

Leopold was an "Incompetent Monarch"......

As apposed to a competent Monarch ?

@ Golk.....Cant let you off that easy dude.

1.  you didnt address the "Reporting" of the New York times.
2.  You didnt address the point that Democracy and discussion bring peace......
... a.  I Basically called you an elitist....that you think Iraq has no chance at peace.

You cant just glide away here, claiming...."We have a fundamental difference."

@ Yell.
And, thats only going back 60 years.

Imagine if we go back 260 years.....what a happy Europe we find, that all know how to get along.

Re: Iraq ... Oct 2008

BW
"@ Golk.....Cant let you off that easy dude."

Oh yes you can, because I won't let you any other alternative. You can call this a victory right now because I just won't try to fight you. You've proven again and again in these forums that, while you can be pretty interesting on some issues, you are as stubborn as Einstein or JA when it comes to Iraq, where we would need more Yell or V. Kemp. For you it's not a debate, never will be.

I'll link this to why the election is at the same time incredibly interesting and profoundly stupid. For fear of shocking the people and having to go into difficult explanations, both campaigns are backing stupid basic gung-ho principles that appeal to the average brain.

Inside the US:
Republicans: "Let the people here be responsible, no government intervention, whatever."
Democrats: "No, we must help all these people out there, USA takes care of its citizens in harm's way."

On Iraq:
Democrats: "Let the people there be responsible, no government intervention, whatever."
Republicans: "We must help all these people out there, USA takes care of its soldiers in harm's way."

That's BS. I, for one, think McCain is right in his "make it 100 years!" statement, except he can't get into detail because it's more challenging to explain and WAY more difficult than stupid "No defeat in Iraq", "proud return of the troops" comments which prove effective.

I'll answer your two points in my-last-post-in-this-thread, knowing full well that on this topic you can't be asked to look beyond the values above, as you play a 'knee-deep in the propaganda' act of "honour the troops and raise the flag, no defeat", unable to grasp the complex situation at hands. Or rather, unwilling to grasp the situation as you've proven times and again that you're far from stupid, but cynically happy to play the tough guy in front of the hesitating younger people on this forum on chosen topics. I can picture you smiling while you press 'submit' more than once - I really can and enjoy it at times, as a reader.

1. A "news analysis" is exactly what the NYT article is, hence the label "news analysis". Here are the facts, how am I supposed to really digest them, where are we going? Here goes a news analysis, that I can trust or not. I personally think it's confusing and poorly written, but it's a news analysis.
2. Democracy and discussion DO bring peace. How do you translate those concepts in Iraq and how do you make sure they will be applied, beyond military demonstrations and mercenaries on payroll? That's the question, not just acknowledging the progress in place.

About calling me an elitist, right. Anybody that tries to see beyond black and white is called an elitist these days, so I'll gladly take that insult.

By the way, it's you who forgot to answer my question, how do you relate that article to your own copy/paste on less casualties?

I'll be happy to hear your more constructive comments on the crisis or the campaign.

Hope my point here is clear, sorry if it isn't.

/me is off this thread, declares BW winner (forfeit)

Re: Iraq ... Oct 2008

I'm too lazy to read any of the posts above tongue

>We have the New York Times....a Rag of its former self, continuing to print as negative a picture to satisfy the Left, and its pursuit of Putting a Socialist in power....and forgetting its JOB as a media source.
Soon, the NEW YORK TIMES....will be right up there with  INQUIRE ...... even to you leftists.

All news and media does the exact same thing. They're looking for money so they'll "spin" the facts. Even in a comunist country where there's no money to gain, there's still the drive to spit out BS to make someone side with you. There has never been, nor will there ever be a media outlet that actually delivers news. It's a sad fact of life.

And the term liberal means Socialist-light. No surprise there. But I wouldn't call a liberal a full-blown socialist. Liberals are about government restricted capitalism.

Re: Iraq ... Oct 2008

Iraq is just new balcans or africa after colonial age.. or actually the africa still.. They got 3 entity's in same country.. without one being in dominance or the "nationalism" of all 3 groups going down at somepoint.. they won't ever have social order there without supression as the 3 entity's are always in odd's in the long run.

Even in finland we had a civil war, red's vs whites on the issue communism or capitalism.. and let's just say it was bloody as hell affair but the issue never came up again after that one.

Re: Iraq ... Oct 2008

Golk.....

Sorry to get back to you so late lad.    Nice little write up there about how you personally feel about 'ole BW.

What blows my mind is how, you elitist types believe YOU all have the answers, how.....in this case.... out of touch I am, or unable to Grasp the situation I am.

YOU  have the answers, and solutions.....ME ??   Im a dolt, unable to discuss with.

In this case it is IRAQ........for you.  ME ??  Im speaking about a NY Times article that is COMPLETELY out of bounds, and not a piece of JOURNALISM, but an editorial.

I wrote in a follow up to your post:

Do you think this is reporting or an editorial?

I responded to your SMUG little wanker remark....after all you won the war ....

I know you elitist types in Europe, turn your pompous nose up at us Americans.
I KNOW you same little snyde remarking leftists, at the expense of the Iraqi People, just LOVE to read the stories of violence and death.

You all gather, and chuckle at a few US Soldier deaths......

You all find it amusing, and get a little giddy school girl feeling all up and down your spineless backs at such bad news.

You think they in the middle east are animals.
You all think the same of Africa.....  its always "They" and "Them" as you all look down from your delusional position of superiority to all.

Golk.
take a long walk, off a short pier.  And when you are submerged in your hatred and disdain....
take a deep breath.....and let it all out.

Stay on topic next time there brilliant one.
Its not reporting........it was NEVER an opinion piece.

We in America once took PRIDE in our Journalism.

After all, it was we in AMERICA who wrote "Freedom of the Press" into our Constitution.

BW replies with his typical, frothing at the mouth vitriol, full of personal attacks

Re: Iraq ... Oct 2008

Selur......would I expect ANYTHING less from you ??

[Flame]

I do expect you to be of a slightly higher intelligence level.....

In the face of GOOD news in Iraq, a stabilizing atmosphere, and political PEACEFUL meetings of the minds......the NY TIMES in an article of supposed JOURNALISM, goes into a Editor supported, News Organization backed, Bleak and dark piece of "Possible" doom, and quotes from the obligatory  "unnamed sources."

No, not unnamed sources...... this one is even bigger..... "A senior Western Official."

SELUR KU
Golk was COMPLETELY off topic, and I even wrote a follow up to get him back on target, and answer his little digs.

BUT !!!!

Re: Iraq ... Oct 2008

Can't see anything wrong with that NYT article... looks like a question is what happens next even if goverment is running atm with all the splinter groups and militias/private armies out there.

Here's what happened in finland.. prolly has happened in several other countries after they got liberated. like in africa after england and france retreated out of there.. aka the areas what they drawed where full of different groups/tribes/beliefs whatever.. Then there's the balcans aswell.. Last what I heard, we'r still there..

Finland got it's independence during russian civil war, from lenin as they could not keep us during it might have been too costly. We had our russian garrisons still in country to keep peace, we had our elections...and same time we had 2 major parties whites (moderate capitalism) and reds (communism).. whites had militia (high officials/farmers), reds had club houses(workers).. 2 competiting organisations... same time. Before the ball started to roll downhill.. Then reds took control of southern finland when soviet union declared it's garrisons are going to move out, whites went north.. whites got some weapons from russians after arresting few of their whole garrisons and taking their arms... and took the country back with help from our division coming back from germany's eastern front... let's just say we where part of russia and our dudes where fighting with on russia's and germany's team both during ww 1. After whites victory, came the short brutal opression against anyone who had red view points and had supported them strongly. This supression then stopped and was carried out by some few hard-core whites for quite some time, until goverment but a stop to it completely, as no1 wanted to see headlines of people kidnapped and escorted to russian border. This white/red crap ended up at latest when we fought first winter war (defence) and then with germany against soviet union to get our lands back what we lost in first war.

Yeah and we still got grudges vs russia, but everyone but hardcore consider the lost terriotory lost, as soviet union wasted the areas completely and it's 2 generations gone already and most people moved to finland from those areas.. and to top it all all our defence is aimed vs russia still these days without any real war plans against any other country... Maybe in 2 generations more, we have stopped the russian/finland common people loathing but that depends how russia aligns with the west anyways as they want to be a super power in future with china/us/ and maybe india.

Anyways what I'm trying to say elections mean nothing as in "major" progress is conserned, unless those 3 intrest parties calm down inside iraq what I can't see happening without blood in reasonable timeframe, maybe if the country would be ruled well and without violence people could get used to eachother in 20-30 years.. but everyone who's anti-western or has lost parents whatever to western troops or problems caused by them are going to go into revenge mode and move to iraq if they aren't already there.

Basicly in my personal opinion iraq is a 50 year job atleast and I'm grateful my country only has troops in afganistan, thou they aren't doing much there but helping out villages in finnish style as engineers/medics with guns as self-defence. As I doubt we'll ever get into a mess without a plan, as most of our officials whatever are career people not political appointees who go with the majority. Not to mention older people would not ever let us send troops with war in their mind as any losses would be felt very heavily as.. 5+million people is less than population of NY area, focus losses to that area and your voters turn against you in mass as we aren't defending our country but fighting in a country without a plan for some high ideals what mean nothing to parents.

Seriously too long post and in language of not my own, so it could be a total mess. Might be just easier to just read the first line and consider rest of my post history and opinions.

edited addition: and I'm out of this topic aswell, just spending some time while waited for tick.
