Topic: Russia loses 33 main battle tanks to pirates!

Yes Russia had a military cargo vessel seized by Somali pirates today, and it's cargo of 33 T-72 main battle tanks, ammunition, and parts.

In other news a US oiler was approached by high speed pirates, and fired warning shots from it's security team, which dissuaded the pirates from engaging.



Russia cannot protect a military cargo vessel, and the Americans protected their military oiler...

Sad sad sad day for Russia.

I guess a more accurate statement is that Kenya/The Shipping Company can't protect their cargo tongue

i think thats awfully harsh considering nothing in your post contradicts what he said.  It doesnt say who was transporting the ships, it could of been the Russian Military. infact the article you quoted to prove him wrong hints that it was the Russian Millitary because it was the Russian Military that retaliated from the attack.

No, I'm not.


Flint is being an idiot and didn't read the story. I on the other hand did. tongue The tanks were sold by the Ukraine to Kenya. Ergo Russia did not lose the tanks, since they weren't their tanks. Nor were they on a Russian freighter or a Russian military vessel.


This is the 21st century. The Ukraine is an independent country nowadays.

Ukraine lost the Tanks, which were Russian Built tanks..

so it is splitting hairs...

Kenya did not lose them since they did not yet receive them, which is common shipping practice around the world... we do not own it til it is delivered unless we are delivering it to ourselves.

we dont know who was transporting them, it could of been Russia. and If Russia wasnt transporting them, why were they the ones that felt the need to retaliate from the attacks?

No, it's not splitting hairs at all. Your title quite clearly said "RUSSIA LOSES 33 main battle tanks to pirates" not "UKRAINE LOSES 33 RUSSIAN TANKS to pirates". There's a big difference between the two statements.

Actually I'm fairly certain most courts would recognize Kenya's right to the tanks. tongue

we dont know who was transporting them, it could of been Russia. and If Russia wasnt transporting them, why were they the ones that felt the need to retaliate from the attacks?

No, it wasn't Russia. It was a Ukrainian freighter. The loss was commented upon by the Ukrainian defense minister.


Russia hasn't retaliated.

Well regardless Ukraine or Russia, or both, lost these tanks on a Ukrainian vessel.

The United States has had 2 naval engagements with hostile forces in this century... Both times Somali Pirates. The first was a pair of destroyers being fired upon by small craft seeking to escape the destroyers (1 killed, 12 captured) which was a one sided wipe, and the other was the US Oiler firing warning shots to dissuade the pirates aiming for it.

if you order a coffee and they make you coffee, and then spill it in the register like you would want because the coffee cant be seperated from lots of money, you dont have a right to that coffee, they can make you a new one.

Yeah, but if you bothered to actually do some research, you'd know that Russia does that regularly.

The U.N. security council passed a resolution a while back against the pirates, so many nations including France, Russia, U.S etc. send patrol ships out.

i agree with theodora, russia sending a ship to the area could easily be just a preventative measue to try and dissuade pirating in general in the region, rather than an act of retaliation. besides the ruskis would love any excuse to beat up on anyone atm, even if it is just somalian pirates rofl
