Topic: Linux

I started about 2 weeks ago to install linux with gnome layout as a complete virgin. As I plan to spend more time in it, I wondered how big the IC-linux comunity really is.

Also, as Gnome is mostly GUI Based I wonder if I miss anything.

Re: Linux

I mostly deal with it on servers.
You're probably using Ubuntu, which I dislike for many reasons, one of them being that if you break something, it isn't all that simple to fix for some reason.

I'm currently playing around with Fedora (text based version).

linux is a path to the dark side. fear, hatred, suffering.

Re: Linux

I tried many OSes in the past, I ran OS/2, Windows and Red Hat Linux (for a little while). To be honest, I liked OS/2 the most, but that's a dead end now, so I stick with the windows branch. Take a look at ReactOS, it's an OS in progress, but it's very promising and they're doing a great job! When it's finished it'll be a lightweight windows lik OS that's 100% compatible with Vista (without the restrictive things and the huge resource demand)..

Re: Linux

You said the words "compatible with vista" I'm shocked.

Friend is a four letter word.

Re: Linux

Yes, kernelwise. Vista is rap, I agree. But that's far more than the kernel. ReactOS tries to achieve compatibility with the vista kernel (so you can run vista-designed programs, including DirectX 10) but without all the junk, errors and annoyances wink

Re: Linux

But it still got some millage to go before it is done though... but great alternative to Ms smile

Re: Linux

It sure is!

Yes, it has quite some milage to go, but the kernel's coming together nicely..

I don't anymore and that is because I agree big_smile

"I'm currently playing around with Fedora"
I have that one on a 4.86 since two days back and it works perfect and fast yikes (wich surprises me idd.)

lol@lucifuge. I Love the dark side. But I'm not guy.:p

@wfs:
sounds great. Do you have linky to download?

Re: Linux

I use Ubuntu at home and Xubuntu at work (older, crappier PC tongue), in addition to Windows XP for games.

I'ves used Mandrake and Fedora in the past though.  I prefer Gnome over KDE and Ubuntu works fine for me.  Any issues I've had I've been able to fix relatively easily (except for the usual ATI driver issues, but that's now a thing of the past).

Re: Linux

Hey Jim smile

Pop by on IRC someday! Not that it's all that active, but meh.

Re: Linux

"I prefer Gnome over KDE"
why is that?  I use gnome simply because I had to pick one of those during install.  It works perfectly clear and is very intuitive.  Much dif with kde?

edit: depiratised.

@ Little Paul

Not sure, really.  KDE is more like a Window's desktop environment - task bar, icon bar, "start" menu ... - but for whatever reason I've grown quite attached to Gnome.  I've tried to like KDE and gave it a fair crack earlier on this year but I just prefer Gnome.  Not sure why.  But KDE is the more graphical out of the two desktop environments and so has, in general, more shiny programs.  But KDE programs work in my Gnome distro anayway, so I'm not that's not a huge issue.  tongue

Re: Linux

Don't bother just yet, it's only worth trying in a virtual machine atm tongue It's still alpha stage wink

Re: Linux

that would take away the benefits at the same time tongue

I want to try to boot Linux from a stick, anyone any experiences with that?

Re: Linux

Use this guide:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2008/05/08/usb-ubuntu-804-persistent-install-via-the-live-cd/

And ye I got experience with it, one tip: Dont let your USB pin become full (for instance with to many updates and shit)

Re: Linux

thx SJ, I'm gonna try the install-on-stick-from-windows tonight.(I'm to lazy for the CD tongue). I can't wait to try it out.

Re: Linux

Np

I tried it and liked it until I got the brilliant idea to try KDE or Gnome alongside the other one.. that took to much space and couldnt use the pen after that since it was full big_smile

Re: Linux

ok, I'm running windows vista basic sad i know, it sucks, I was thinking of un-installing vista and uploading linux, though I know very little about it.

in other words, help!

Re: Linux

My advice:(I recently started to discover linux)
If you start from zero simply go to another version of windows till you get used to linux. Put it on a stick like me or on another disk/partition as a dual boot. I found out its very easy to start, but it takes a while till you found all the functions you got used to in windows. When you need your computer urgently you might not have the time.

@SJ:
It took me like 10' and it was installed and ready to use. smile Next thing on the list is finding drivers for my NW-card and a decent firewall. I'm only into it a few weeks and already starting to feel like a master/addict smile

Re: Linux

Insignififcant
Burn a live cd for either Ubuntu or some other distro (Fedorace core perhaps?) and then try it out - when you use the dualcd it dosent install anything - you can try it without installing anything

@ Little Paul
Having a firewall in ubuntu is like ...attacking or banking in IC with a race that got -30 in everything - rather useless but you can do it

In Ubuntu (opposite of winblows) all ports are closed per default and can only be opened by transactions  comming from your computer... makes sense? (Tired and late) you can install a firewall but it is not really needed - same with antivirus - you can install it but you wont really need it - it will just slow your computer down...

Re: Linux

I concur.  Firewalls are not especially useful and antivirus software is less than useless.  Almost all viruses are written to work in Windows and hence will not work in Linux.  So really, don't bother.

@ Insignificant

What hardware have you got?  Specifically, what graphics card are you using?  Bearing in mind we're talking about linux, please don't say ATI. tongue

I also concur with SpeedJerry on this too... get a live CD - you can easily download the .iso from the wonder web and burn to disc (can use a free software package like ImgBurn.  When you restart your computer ensure that the disc is in the drive and that your BIOS tries to boot from disc drive before your hard drive.  Then see the awesomeness of linux in action.  If you like what you see, you can use the inbuilt partition tools in the live CD to partition your hard drive so you can install a copy of linux and dual boot your system.

As for what version of linux, I personally use Ubuntu (you can get versions of Ubuntu that use the Gnome, KDE and XFCE desktop environments), but I have used Mandrake (now Mandriva; uses only KDE) in the past which I liked.  Fedora is also pretty good.

To those who understand I extend my hand; To the doubtful I demand to take me as I am.

Re: Linux

I use Xubuntu for two reasons.

1. I love xfce. So much better then KDE. Gnome is blah
2. Ubuntu is by far the simplest distribution. Some "experts" say that ubuntu is crappy because it's too easy or too"windows like". Those are noobs who haven't realized the joys of an operating system that can take care of itself.
