Topic: House Oil Drilling Bill. A Charade.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The House of Representatives is set to vote Tuesday on a bill clearing the way for more oil drilling in the United States, with the Democrats who control Congress yielding to Republican pressure on the issue.

The bill would expand offshore oil drilling, but not to the extent that many Republicans want.

But some Republicans planned to fight the bill because it contains some provisions they don't like, including a repeal of tax cuts for the oil industry and a lack of incentive for states to allow drilling on their land.

Though the bill would expand offshore oil drilling, Republicans say it still would leave too many offshore areas banned.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, said her party's plan presented a choice between "the status quo, which is preferred by Big Oil," and "change for the future to take our country in a new direction."
.....

But Republicans say the House bill wouldn't expanded offshore drilling enough, and they were huddling Tuesday to map out their strategy for fighting the proposal.

Rep. Mike Pence, an Indiana Republican, called the Democratic bill "a charade," denying it would do what its backers claim.

"This is not 'yes' to drilling. This is 'yes, but,' " he said.

"This is 'yes, but no drilling in Alaska, no drilling in the Eastern Gulf, no drilling inside 50 miles,' " Pence said. "This is 'yes, but no litigation reform that will prevent radical environmental attorneys from tying up leases even before a single shovel of dirt is turned.' "

Democrats and Republicans traded harsh words on the House floor Tuesday in the debate over the bill.

Rep. Anthony Weiner, a New York Democrat, said President Bush's "idea of an energy policy is holding hands with the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, embracing him with a big smooch."

Now for the best part of a ole' Black Wing Thread.......my comments.  big_smile

First off, this is a typical CNN article.    Completely biased and relating ONLY what its Leftist so called "Reporter and Editor" think are important.

First rule of Journalism.....get as much info as possible into the first 3 Paragraphs....most will leave the story at that point.

The Article:

". . .the Democrats who control Congress yielding to Republican pressure on the issue."

Yielding ??   they BLOCKED the Republican Bill, by leaving for vacation w/o a vote killing the proposal 6 weeks ago.

"The bill would expand offshore oil drilling, but not to the extent that many Republicans want."

EXPAND !!!   It will SHRINK the area for offshore drilling.....and stop Alaska from open offshore drilling, restricting them to FIFTY Miles offshore, and NO MORE Than  ONE HUNDRED miles offshore......    WOW....what would we do w/o elected weenies ??

" But some Republicans planned to fight the bill because it contains some provisions they don't like, including a repeal of tax cuts for the oil industry and a lack of incentive for states to allow drilling on their land."

SOME Republicans ??  How about MOST...and some democrats ?  Not tax cuts, tax rebates for alternative studies.
And WHY NOT give the states the resources for the states area ??   After all we are a REPUBLIC, not a FEDERAL SOCIALIST DOMAIN !!!

"Though the bill would expand offshore oil drilling, Republicans say it still would leave too many offshore areas banned."

EXPAND again....is a lie.  A BLATANT Lie.
Too many area banned ??   How about anything inside of FIFTY MILES offshore ?!?!?!

"House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, said her party's plan presented a choice between "the status quo, which is preferred by Big Oil," and "change for the future to take our country in a new direction."

Well, there it is.  Pelosi telling us what she wants.

The Destruction of big oil, and NO OIL DRILLING for America.
She wants a "New Direction."

Please.  I hope this bill gets crushed.

Imagine.  You can only Drill 50+ Miles offshore, but not further than 100 miles.
The EVIL REPUBLICANS are looking to drill THREE miles offshore.
HOW EVIL is that.  They want to drill where the oil is....not in HUNDREDS of Feet of water ??   Or off the edge of the continental Shelf.

Come .......joust w/the master.

But...But Pelosi wants to save da oith!

Rape it. Rape it and give me back $1.79 gasoline.

Re: House Oil Drilling Bill. A Charade.

$1.79 will never again happen - as long as oil is the main source of energy. Not for the next 5-10-20 years.

I do not know how the engineering works behind drilling. I thought that you could access the same oil field even if you do not drill on top of it?

That said I believe that the tax credits for alternative (soon-to-be *MAINSTREAM*) energy should be the most important topic. They can be the boat to carry us over the storm.

Re: House Oil Drilling Bill. A Charade.

You can't drill 200 miles away!

What is really stupid is that Russia and Cuba are drilling off our coast anyhow. Its not as if its empty if we don't do it.

Re: House Oil Drilling Bill. A Charade.

Uhh, I don't know much about oil - and I thought that some platforms have been built at like 200 miles offshore - but the platform does not have to be drilling down, it can be drilling sideways and thus you can extract oil even if you are not on top of it. Once, again - I dunno much about that. I would like to raise a few more topics, as a matter of fact.

Some of the oil platforms are to be constructed in the Hurricane valley. This summer we had 3 big ones going through the coast. They can damage petroleam drilling platforms and refineries along the coast. There are several points at which this can happen - for example one of the ships that was carrying petroleum products had his engine shut off as Ike approached. My point is - do not count on this for everything, it's a shaky bussiness.

Now, that is not a reason not to go after it - but just one to watch out for.

The reason that I am skeptical about drilling all the oil - it is not that the enourmous demand making the oil input relatively small in comparison. My big reason for me is that those oil fields are a big savings account. It is just stored energy that we can tap whenever. If you agree with this , which most of you possibly won't, it becomes a timing issue - when would we open it. It becomes *goverment spending* of sorts. Ok, not really, but close enough, huh?

I would honestly be more agreeable to open more fields when I am about to retire. For the record - I finished college this year!

Therefore, for me - just for me - not sure if all of the fields should be open right now.

Re: House Oil Drilling Bill. A Charade.

I'm saying if the oil is 200 miles from where I am now, I can't reach it by slant drilling.

And I'd rather have the oil myself than have future generations look at oil like we look at horses and steam engines

Re: House Oil Drilling Bill. A Charade.

Great, lets extend our dependency on oil by increasing the funding to research new places to drill it. We need to separate ourselves from this 19th century relic and embrace the energies of the future. Their's this car that runs on water  and a town that runs on an atom. How bout that?

Re: House Oil Drilling Bill. A Charade.

A town that runs on an atom? Hydrogen?

Everything bad in the economy is now Obama's fault. Every job lost, all the debt, all the lost retirement funds. All Obama. Are you happy now? We all get to blame Obama!
Kemp currently not being responded to until he makes CONCISE posts.
Avogardo and Noir ignored by me for life so people know why I do not respond to them. (Informational)

Re: House Oil Drilling Bill. A Charade.

Eh, stupid quip for Nuclear Energy. I realize it is misleading :-p

Re: House Oil Drilling Bill. A Charade.

btw the water car is electricity and water tongue

But yes, I purposely mislead your atom statement to make you have to expand upon the stuff tongue

Re: House Oil Drilling Bill. A Charade.

Yeah, yunno, water powered car doesn't sound great either though. Water could run out if we were destroying the molecule to power all of our cars and those effects would be much more devastating!

Re: House Oil Drilling Bill. A Charade.

We need OIL now.
12% of our GDP is spent on Oil products.

If 70% of our Oil is IMPORTED....then you can see why we have such a HUGE Trade Deficit.

Republicans/Conservatives have been SCREAMING for Oil drilling and Nuclear energy for Decades.

NOW, when America is FINALLY opening their eyes, and actually embracing the issue.......PELOSI, et al tries to ram this BULLSHIT bill of do nothing through Congress.

I know we have A huge amount of coal, and be can burn it clean.  thats fine for Electicity, although we should do Nuclear.
BUT, OIL.

MAN, the US Is sitting on so much.  And we let Liberals and Enviromental NUT JOBS run our lives.
We need oil now......

Later, as we develope alternatives....That we are on the cutting edge of, by the way......when it is feasable, and not GOVT. Mandated.....It will be the main sources.

Today, it is STILL oil.

Re: House Oil Drilling Bill. A Charade.

but isnt drilling in 50-100 miles still better then no drilling at all?
one thing i hate about politics.. parties allways say.. yes ok.. but... and in the end they reject it instead of taking at least a small step.

Re: House Oil Drilling Bill. A Charade.

drilling oil does not mean that it will be much cheaper in a few years. this always depends on world market prices. the oil industry won't sell for low prices, only because americans want to drive big cars. the oil industry is interested in high prices to cover their costs and gain profits to rally their stocks and make their shareholders happy. the consumer has and will never have any profit from it.
besides oil is not always gas. some sorts of oil are not usable to refine them into gas. those are used in the chemical industry.
these are all just hysterical reactions of a society not able to transform into a more energy saving economy. buy small cars, turn of the light (in house) and drive less. the us- car industry is in a sorry state, near a collapse. why? because they slept like the US slept in a dreamworld of cheap energy for all time. now you just hit the reality and its time to wake up.
