Should have called off!
Texas Hold Em makes it too easy for noobs like me though
I have been on and off here for a number of years, I stopped counting after four. I'm 31 years old, a US citizen, raised in a liberal household yet turned out something quite different. My political opinions have evolved and transformed much over the years, but at the moment I suppose you could best describe me as a radical free marketeer.
A bit about my personal life: I started taking flying lessons at 17 to become a private pilot.
At 19 I enlisted in the Army National Guard as MOS 93P Aviation Operations Specialist. Meanwhile I was a full-time student plus working two jobs. I graudated college with an MS in Molecular Biology and a BS in Biochemistry.
In 1998, as part of my ARNG service, I took part in an ongoing exercise in the Caribbean called Operation New Horizons. I was deployed to Honduras and aided in the orchestration of humanitarian relief flights conducted in our AO. I separated from the ARNG in 2000 as a Specialist.
Upon discharge, I sought employment in the aviation industry. I worked as an Aircraft Dispatcher for two different airlines, the latter employer being one of the major legacy carriers. I've since quit due to pay reductions and other annoyances with the airline in question.
In 2005, one year before quitting unnamed legacy airline, I resumed formal flight training to upgrade my pilot license to Commercial, and eventually all the way through Airline Transport Pilot. I now serve as a First Officer for a small regional carrier that mostly performs cargo operations. I am actively seeking employment with a passenger airline.
Oh yeah, and I finally got married to the most incredible and intelligent woman I've ever known last Spring. Never thought this day would come.
congrats Acolyte

Acolyte: given what ye have said in th' past I would class ye as an anarchist with a right win' capitalist leanin'..
Also Supersoaker: you suck! I hope that makes you feel more at home...
Phorum Phantom: screw you hippy! I am not some larmy pom!

lol fool =p
You_Fool: "given what ye have said in th' past I would class ye as an anarchist with a right win' capitalist leanin'.."
Thank you.
I never knew women would consider an anarchist/capitalist as husband material. All the intelligent ones seem to be liberal, lol. But congrats on finding such a lucky woman.
She is a recovered Randian Objectivist (7 years sober). More of a minarchist with slight Chicagoan bias, but gradually migrating to the cause.
SD: X( English are teh ghey!
What good did they do us?
Cricket and rugby!
Well shoot newb is taking off for a year

He'll have the free time when he can't bear to watch entire colts and cowboys games ![]()
SD: better yet Cricket and Football... Rugby is fine I guess, but so many guys sticking their heads in other guys arses tends to put me off a little...
After further deliberation, I have decided to stick with what I said earlier. I am quitting IC until pirate day is removed. I won't make any further posts, or play, until or if then.
ROFLMAO. I'm gonna start the "save Justinian"-fund.
something like:
...He's not as evil as he appears, he had a difficult childhood.
about me..
I'm a 24 year old dutch guy from the Netherlands, currently in my 6th year of medicine. Not playing IC anymore (basically cuz it's a depressing, time consuming and barely rewarding game). Instead I party, meet interesting people. No relationships currently although something is blossoming between me and a totally awesome girl that came into my life 2 weeks ago. My hero is Aldous Huxley and I guess that makes me somewhat of a hippy. The society he describes in "Island" is how the world should be. Hobbies: Music, movies, used to be very good at chess but its rusty.
Politically I'm pro civil rights law wise. I think people should have the choice to make their own mistakes, on the condition that they're well informed.
In international politics Obama's a very welcome surprise to me cause he pretty much says what I think about most topics.
I resent how politicians use "tough guy politics", as opposed to sensible nuanced politics, to sway dumb people. This is why democracy is so imperfect.
What else, economics... thats a hard one. Socialism makes sure nobody gets left behind, but encourages laziness, while Capitalism might work better, but is very unjust to some if not alot of people. Socialist influences in a Capitalist system are the only good option in this world. The ideal would be if the world would be better, and the purpose of life wouldn't be money, power and consumption, but happiness, mental and social development and striking a balance between man and nature... there'd actually be hope in mankind.
On religion: there's no way to ever prove or disprove the existance of a god, a life before birth and life after death. So I don't believe or disbelieve any of it. The real purpose in life is to make the here and now as pleasant, useful and fulfilling for yourself and others as possible.
22 year old new zealand male, just finsihing off hons degree in politics and international relations
i am disenchanted
on free markets: all economic systems are flawed, all go through cycles of decline and rebirth, none has the ability to replicate itself everywhere

Oh Christ....another University Indoctrinated Leftists.
Yes. Its the fault of the west....what ever it may be.
hmmm as an indoctrinated university student from a western university shouldnt i be all for the promotion of western values and ideals...not against them. it is the fault of the west to think that their values are universal and should be spread to all of the world, no matter what the costs to other cultures
perhaps i should have been more specific, i am interested in the enlightenment and the percieved cultural superiority of the western project of modernity, and why there is the assumption in the west that all countries going through modernity of some kind will inevitably end up just like us, because obviously we are teh bestest ![]()

In Universities, western values of modernity tend to not be typically espoused, rather the degenerate nonsense of post-modernism. And you speak of post-modernism like you recited it from a textbook.
Post-modernism is degenerate because of the value it assigns to cultures. What is culture? It is a set of recipes or scripts by which a population lives by. It's stupid to reinforce and celebrate recipes when they are maladaptive to the current conditions. Rather, culture should be naturally forced to adapt from external pressures, not preserved because it is somehow subjectively perceived valuable. In this way, the superiority of culture can be measured by its yielding results.
The western project of modernity says that the universe has order, and this order can be discovered by empirical means. Disregarding the philosophical problems of empiricism, you can not deny that it has brought untold power through science etc. According to my culture meter, this makes modernity a superior project compares to the post-modern project of cementing and sheltering lesser cultures (measured by inferior results, and adapted to traditional economies).
