Topic: Fraud Has It Effected you ?

okay well im not sure if this goes here but i mean you see it on tv about how people have been effected by fraud but you always think it is never going to happen to you well thats what i thought but it did and to 200 other people in the town where i live in the space of a month and the police did nothing personaly i find it very shamefull

Details
Well The garage up the road from my house where my father on the day was filling his car up he opted to use our bank card which had all of our money in where his card details where copied in the machine and a few weeks later we had found every penny we had was taken out of our bank account and the bank offered to give us a hundred pound to cover it but i mean we lost more than 6x that amount how does that help us sad

So I guess im saying do you think fraud isnt publicised enough and are the police doing enough ?

My mom was a ventriloquist and she always was throwing her voice. For ten years I thought the dog was telling me to kill my father.

Re: Fraud Has It Effected you ?

I hear that kind of fraud is very frequent in Europe, using computers to copy cards.

Not so much in America, because here it's easier just to counterfeit new cards really.  Also we have several layers of prosecution for that kind of thing 1) federal if you steal from an account in a bank that's a member of the Federal Reserve, use national phone lines for fradulent charges or rely in any way for the mail eg delivery of underwear you bought online with a stolen card 2) state laws against larceny...so you could be prosecuted twice, more likely that one of your cohorts in crime will sell you out for a lighter sentence.

It does happen and it's growing but not as bad as in Europe from what I hear.  Also it is one of the few cash crimes that definitely draw prison time because it takes years for the victim to clear their credit.

I don't see why the police don't do anything, if it's just 100 pounds per person, for 200 people that is 20,000 pounds.  You need to get together with folks and badger your politicians.

NEVER....NEVER  put personal information that you would not personally hand to a stranger in your vehicle or in the trash.

That is the rule of thumb.

Thats why Shredders are very  popular here in the US.

Shred everything that has at a minimum, your address and name on it.

Re: Fraud Has It Effected you ?

I have shredders in my office trash can, and I shred everything. I bring my trash out on the morning of the pick-up, rather than the night before, if I am at home to do so. I'm always up early as long as I am not on a night schedule, so it's not ever a problem. Digital copies of sensitive information (bill payments, receipts, financial statements, portfolios, etc) are kept in removable storage. I rarely use my check and credit cards, preferring cash for most transactions under $50.00. Two of my long-standing revolving credit lines I only use a couple times per year, and I use separate PINs for each card. Additionally, my credit cards can not simply be signed for, I've specifically requested PIN challenges for every transaction.

I also have a heavy duty safe in my closet bolted to the floor. I didn't buy it, actually, it happened to come with my house. I've personally altered the combination twice.

I'm not paranoid, just a "preventative measures" kind of guy.

I smell parnanoia.

If someone really wants your money they will get it. No matter what you do.

Not many people know this, but I own the first radio in Springfield. Not much on the air then, just Edison reciting the alphabet over and over. "A" he'd say; then "B." "C" would usually follow...

you don't really believe that do you Arcolex?

if so, spare yourself the trouble and just send me a couple hundred Euro.

Re: Fraud Has It Effected you ?

sounds like good advice:)

a shredder sounds as a mighty handy thing to have around, there are loads of stuff coming in with name and address on them, i usually tear it up a few times..

till the end of time..

That doesn't mean you should make it easy for them.

Nicely put.

Personally, I don't give too much care to my personal information, except when it comes to online. I -try- to keep virus, spyware, and adware scans up to date, and never do ANY banking online. If I absolutely have to use a credit card, then I run those scans before putting in any information, and only use PayPal. I know scans of this type aren't 100% reliable, but so far it seems to work ok. + I'm vigilant when online. I still see some people click on those "you are the 1 millionth visitor - click here to claim prize" ads tongue

Also, I'm trying to get a student visa with a max of $500, so if my personal information is compromised, I can won't be stuck paying thousands back to the card company.

Arocalex is correct yell. Don't flame him for it. There are ppl who spend all their time scheming to steal your money. Key loggers, email hacking, bank card cloning, etc. etc. They find ways to get into your property. Nothing is guaranteed against someone who knows what they are doing. For online transactions, I only use a prepaid debit card. I try not to use my social security info too often for signing things and when I do, I try to keep it to secure connections. Virus, firewall, security stuff. I try to keep that up to date and I tear up letters that have my info on it before sending to the trash. A shreddar might be a good idea. Never thought about it. And I have an account with a credit agency that updates me whenever my social, credit history, checking purchases, etc. are made. I receive an email with detailed info.

My friend sold his WoW account and was paid through email. A few days later the transaction was voided because the buyer used a hacked PayPal account. The owner of the PayPal account contacted the police and my friend..and I have no heard how it played out. Careful of PayPal CT!

Re: Fraud Has It Effected you ?

yeah a lot of people do shady things with paypal. I don't generally use it cause it seems the security on it is kinda weak. I only use paypal for ebay or IC donations. And like I said, prepaid debit card wink
