Topic: OBAMA, "When you put Lipstick on a Pig, its still a pig."

Some are saying, this is a reference to the PALIN Address to the nation in her acceptance speech.

Palin said, "The difference between a bulldog and a hockey Mom.......Lipstick."


Obama was talking about McCain's Policys.
He talked about, McCains Foreign Policy, Tax Policy, Border Policy, Education Policy, etc.....
He went to talking about how McCain will "Change Nothing....."  and after all,

Obama Continued, "When you put Lipstick on a pig, its still a pig."




You all know, and now you know if you dont know, that Im a Conservative, I will vote for McCain now, instead of staying home.

I think it is STUPID.  A [cockamamie] ploy to boil up a whole lot of nothing.  Obama meant no harm.
I HOPE....that Palin, or McCain will come out and say the same....that they believe Obama did not mean to smear Palin.

Mmh that was just put in the thread about speeches, but if you think it deserves a new one...

Saying the word "lipstick" is obviously a link to Palin's speech.

But the full metaphor is the lipstick thing then "cover fish under paper and, height years after, it still stink".

I think Obama is trying to cut the whole Palin strategy of attacking the press and presenting her as a victim judged on personal matters + sexism.

I expect him to come out and say that assimilating Palin to a pig would be assimilating McCain to smelly fish, and that it's ridiculous, somehow making the point that the McCain campaing is trying strongly to tie him to the smear and to call him sexist, when all evidence proves he's been out of it. They desperately need to cut the momentum.

powerlineblog.com has video of Obama saying it.  From the way his crowd cheered I think it was meant as a slap on Palin.  Golk's right, he's fighting McCain's #2 too much

By the way, I repeatedly explained why they chose Palin, and how brilliant it was. And that the "Palin's plan" succeeded beyond expectations, except they did not manage to tie the smear to Obama's camp, despite many attempts listed in the Palin thread.

I stated also how dangerous it was to keep pushing for a link to Obama instead of enjoying their current success and thinking about her future role.

Well, after watching that web ad from the McCain camp, I think they just crossed the line, and that the same strategists responsible for the brilliance of the "Palin's plan" could not get enough.
Mike Huckabee already said he did not think Obama was calling Palin a pig. And the ad is so misleading ("About Sarah Palin???") that it will do a lot of harm if McCain does not intervene before Obama.

I am a casual follower of the USA elections I have looked at headlines and read the occasional story but I admit I haven't been following it too closesly. I think it is a pretty sad reflection on both of the campaigns that the few things I am aware of are Obama's heritage, McCain's age and military service, Palin's moose shooting and Biden's name. These are the only things I hear. I am not aware of any of the policies or what these people stand for, other than that Palin likes guns. Shouldn't election campaigns be the other way around? Shouldn't the casual observer be ignorant of who the people are but know what they stand for? Shouldn't the media attention be about policies not soundbites about animals and lipstick?

Politics is screwed up, and not just in USA.

I think Obama is a brilliant individual and will throw out as many punches at Palin as possible before the debates, where he will then proceed to dismantle McCain's new message of "change". At the same time, he'll have opened the door for Biden to come out well in his debate with Palin, as she will probably be on the offensive after all the remarks made about her.

What republicans failed to realise is that while gving Palin a huge amount of attention was good as she was a fresh face, a woman and a conservative, it was also bad as it would expose her way too much. Now all her tidbits will be explored to the maximum byt the democrat camp and if nothing changes quickly, she'll be nothing more than a punching bag.

This week, Biden said the Palin nomination was a step backward for women, and said if Republicans love kids with special needs so much, why don't tehy back stem cell research.

You can open a door for a pig to do well, but you can't make him dance.

I think Palin should wear lotsa lipstick and speak under a sign "SOME PIG"

The Democrats don't dare spell out what they'd do,  nobody wants unlimited graft, more regulations, open borders  and higher taxes.

The Republicans won't actually do anything they promise because they've got too many loose cannons.

It's easier for both sides to avoid specifics.

Well in that case, the USA election has got me entirely stumped. As far as I can see, one side is campaigning on the novelty of a (half) black guy saying vague things about change and hope, while the other side is campaigning on the novelty of a woman who isn't even the presidential candidate while saying vague things about...change!

So there is your choice, change and/or hope Vs change.

that's not caring about the disabled child
that's being selfish
because you'd then be promoting the death of a different baby
(IF the stem cell comes from a fetus/embryo/etc and not just DNA from someone still living)

Maybe not, th' reference t' lipstick is clearly placed, but th' context he used it in were bein' in makin' a point that McCain's campaign is really no different t' th' current Bush administration.  It could in no way be interpreted as an attack on Palin, it is an attack on th' republican campaign with a reference thrown in t' provide a bit o' humour.  How it could e'er be construed as sexist is entirely bafflin' t' me.

In all objectivity, there is no 'sexism' anywhere.

If you think, and it seems you agree with me on that one, that he did an intentional use of lipstick, he's taking a famous "pitbull with lipstick", an expression, to turn into "lipstick on a pig", another expression making fun of the first.

Unless you think he really wanted to say Palin was a pig, which, even with the circus it's becoming won't happen before another 20 years of show politics. Honestly. Sexism?

The republicans shot themselves in the foot in a strategy that was so far efficient. If we continue to see such stupid accusations, Obama will be offered the chance to come out and set things straight regarding the position of his campaign, which clearly avoided any critics on gender or family, and it will downplay the current effective crusade against leftist media, leftist friends, leftists whatever who have been less cautious.
