Topic: Big Bang !

some nut jobs from UK are tryin to recreate the big bang...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7599040.stm

What do ppl think about this?

Considering the first one created like, an entire Universe.

(BTW this post isnt meant to be offending for religious ppl who don't believe in the big bang, in my oppinion I think it's a stupid thing to try and recreate...)

Re: Big Bang !

The LHC at CERN is an international endeavour and not limited to scientists from UK or Sheffield:P

And when they say "recreating the big bang" it really is a bit different! In the LHC "big bang" they will be smashing together two beams of protons at incredibly high energies which hopefully will result in the release of detectable short lived particles which we have not seen before and which existed shortly after the big bang in the high energies of the universe less than a second after creation. The big fish to try to find is the Higgs boson which is a theoretical particle linked to the theoretical Higgs field which permeates the universe and is the origin of mass. No new universes will be created! Just (hopefully) a few particles we haven't seen before.

Nice stuff big_smile

Good luck to them tongue

Re: Big Bang !

Love it Rambaldi how you have a opinion about this while not even knowing what they are actually doing, but the BBC can be blamed for putting a incomplete and partially incorrect piece on there site about this.

The LHC is a wonderful project, and I regret people fear the machine so much...

Re: Big Bang !

can we make a bomb out of it?

Re: Big Bang !

isnt it possible that the whole process could potentially create a black hole and suck the known universe into it tongue

Yes we can, but it's accuracy is crap, range is crap, and effects vary shot to shot.

Re: Big Bang !

I did hear tiny black holes might  be created by it, they are gonna suck up the entire world!

Or they are unstable and stop existing after a few nanoseconds

What do I have to work with?

Re: Big Bang !

It is possible that tiny black holes will be created but if so, they would have far too little energy to be sustained. Also as far as I am aware the creation of such tiny black holes is a very very faint possibility. It has to be remembered that anything can be said to be possible, that does not mean that the magnitude of the possibility is even worth considering

ah!

maybe the world is gonna come to an end in 2012 because of this and we can thank England big_smile

Right, so what are we waiting for?  Can we get this going?  Any other feedback?

Re: Big Bang !

If the means to create blackholes exists with this device, then the sun creates millions every nanosecond... it's simple science.

Re: Big Bang !

No, because if we did create one, it would be to small, you would need a device on a much larger scale, also if we really can make them, and theres an exit on the other side, is this the begining to "jumps" through space?

Wrong.
The sun has heat and pressure, the LHC makes particles collide with each other with nearly the speed of light.
That's something different

What do I have to work with?

Re: Big Bang !

is it? how fast do they move in nature? electrons move at light speed I thought

although the sun might slow them down a bit

Re: Big Bang !

The particles they're colliding in the LHC are not electrons though.

What do I have to work with?

Re: Big Bang !

Everything collides in the sun, and often at the speed of light.

Re: Big Bang !

If you're interrested by that check out National Geographic's "Birth of the Universe" - That's awesome, about everything including the Big Bang.

Re: Big Bang !

You're wrong Flint, the heavier particles in the sun don't have the speed of light, only the photons and they collide with everything anyways that doesn't have much effect.

What do I have to work with?

Re: Big Bang !

I'm sure they know what they're doing but still. a black hole is something they don't know everything about so there might still be some very very small risk.

and even if things would go terribly wrong and a black hole would suddenly become selfsustaining in energy nobody of us would know cause we'd all be dead in a matter of seconds( or not dead since nobody knows what happens in a darkhole.

Re: Big Bang !

Actually, it could very well take several years before we even feel the black hole's presence if it's self sustaining

What do I have to work with?
