Of course ONE of the reasons for invading Iraq was about OIL.
The MAIN issue was about a Despot in control of a resource that was letting his infrastructure deteriorate
AND
at the same time, a Despot that threatens the flow of oil.....
On the Geo-political front..... Yes, it gives a military presence now in another part of the gulf region
Having a friendly Govt. in Iraq, that the US/Coalition (UK included, NATO to a lesser extent) helped secure,...
Eliminates Saddam's Despotic Govt.
Eliminates a Brazen, and known Terrorist supporter, from funding, through training.
Frees up a western friendly Kurd region to prosper and unit w/the lower Sunni/Shia regions.
More importantly, it drives a wedge between the Terror supporting States of Despotic Syria, and Fundamentalist Iran.
Puts Direct Pressure on IRAN from two sides.
When the attacks happened on 9/11, it gave the US Govt. and US Allies the right to go on the offensive vs. :
Terror supporting States
and, the Terrorist organizations themselves.
Yea....It also puts pressure on Certain Govts. (Pakistan, Lybia, Saudi Arabia, UAE, etc.) to crack down on their own peoples involvement in the Terror Orgs, and take a stand on what their Govt. position is on this issue.

Why?
Please no arguments that have been falsified (WMDs) or moral arguments (to oust an evil dictator) that never apply to foreign policy. Economic, social and political (extension of power, power equilibrium etc) arguments are the only valid ones.
Ideas?
I used to think that it was for control over Iraqi oil, but it doesn't seem that way. There has to be a political or economic reason somewhere, but what it is?

And yet not once did I hear this brought up until after the invasion was over.
When said DESPOT invades Kuwait and threatens Saudi.....
US draws a line in the sand, rallies the rest of the world through the UN, and kicks his ass back home.
Was it about OIL ?? FOR sure.
Was it about America only ?? Hell know. Its about prosperous global commerce for all.
Fast forward to 9/11.
After years of attacks on America and Americans abroad, and 8 years of do nothing by a sitting President, a new President takes over.
America is attacked in a horrible way.
Gloves are off. Time to go for the new threat; time to go on the offensive.
You can either hide in the basement, or change the path the middle East was heading to.
Separation of one Religion in the state is a proven method to prosperity.
Elimination of Religion in the state, or a Religious state is a proven danger.
