Topic: USA should change its name

Back in the beginning of the US, the nation was highly decentralized and was considered as a federation of states who exercised great autonomy. At the time, states could do things that are unheard of today, such as print their own money etc. But with the result of the civil war, state autonomy increasingly diminished both politically and socially. Today, states operate as though they were provinces of a nation-state, and American people no longer identify themselves with their state, but their nation.

So in function the US operates like a nation-state, but we still have some remaining things of the long-dead federation. I think we should remove them and fully embrace the political and social reality that the US is now a full blown nation-state, not a federation of autonomous states as it was in its infancy.

Lets stop calling ourselves United States of America, and lets rename state to province.

Now we could call ourselves America, but that would seem odd since we are located in North America, and there is a South America beneath our own continent. The Canadians are equally justified in calling themselves Americans with this logic.

In the past, states have called themselves by the their tribe, such as France (Franks) or the dominating city Roman Empire (Rome) or Athens (Athens). However, no such option exists in the US. Though we could call ourselves the New Yorkan Empire, nobody would go with that. However, since we are in fact the most powerful nation in the world with military bases on every continent and in many nations, with the ability to pursue a unilateral foreign policy, I think it's very fitting to call ourselves the Empire of America. In that way, we can still call ourselves Americans and it would still be fitting to do so. Now the problem with this is that past empires in history were usually ruled by an emperor, however the British changed all that because they had a powerless king and the parliament was the main governing body of the British Empire. So lets take a step further than the British and call ourselves an empire with only a republican government and no emperor.

Long live the American Empire! The Empire will strike back at you!

All Empire falls though. sad

I would prefer something ridiculously long like "Atlantic-Pacific Federated Provinces of America" or "APFPA".  I actually like that because of the abbreviation.  big_smile

Pffft, just because every other empire has doesn't mean ours will. Ours might last until the earth blows up.

An interesting idea for its precision, but the idea is not to consider ourselves a federation but a nation-state.

No. If that were true world history would be very different. All the nations of Europe, for example, would have secretly build a mega huge fleet that the British could never find as though they were going to hell if they didn't adhere to their empire-killing obligation.

Re: USA should change its name

Federal States of America?
Hmm, that sounds familiar... film?

Re: USA should change its name

Considering there is an active movement to change back to higher State control versus Federal control, and I support this, do not call the game just yet.

Everything bad in the economy is now Obama's fault. Every job lost, all the debt, all the lost retirement funds. All Obama. Are you happy now? We all get to blame Obama!

Re: USA should change its name

well it should actually be an assembly of states, like the constitution professed... but as we have grown, we have forgotten that the oath to protect ourselves from enemies  "BOTH FORIEGN AND DOMESTIC" was the intent of our founding fathers.
and it has some how been turned to, just been protect our government.....
the people and the government are two separate entities, so if the world abroad can respect this, then they can help us to be once again "TRUE US citizens"

Re: USA should change its name

yes change it to

Obamarama! big_smile

Re: USA should change its name

no he ha nothing to do with that... we need to grab our balls and decide that we have nothing against another race and  realise that the government has made this up to keep us separated
remember divide and conquer is the best form of defence, and our own government has used it against us since we were born
they have promoted the hate so that we as a whole didn't pay attention to what they have done to take everything that our forefathers fought for to give us.
i still hope for a peaceful revolution, but i feel that the closer we get to it the more inclined that our government is to make it a racial one..... don't be fooled.
they want us o fight each other so that they can keep us under control.
if we bonded together then they would try to take off with our countries money.... but all we have to do is make our money different... just the way they did to the south, and the would only be holding paper with no value.

Re: USA should change its name

as well as all of those people that say we owe them trillions of dollars, that they also owe us, it is a paper game.... we don't owe anything when compared to what we are owed.... and if we tell them to get it from this person or that.... then they will have nothing coming from us... and the new laws on eminent domain says we can take any property from anyone that is of strategical worth.... that means china lives on water and Arabia lives on sand, and we have everything we need.

Re: USA should change its name

the United states is a collection of states each with their own government and military. they are still a federation befitting of the name The United States of America.

Yes we could, we wouldn't but we could.

How about America Inc.

I was thinking the same thing, could cause trouble.
